It's also gradually getting earlier and earlier. It used to be about 10pm or 11pm PST, giving players in PST through EST at least a bit of time to log in and play. Now it's all the way back to 6pm PST. I got about an hour after getting home and settled from work in EST, and I imagine most in PST weren't even home/off work yet.

It's been a long time, but I remember maintenance happened late at night a whole lot back then. I'm not sure when or why they stopped caring about american primetime...but it does kinda suck. -

The fact is, no matter when they take the servers down globally, it's going to be prime time for someone. It's unavoidable in a global service.
Also yes, the name "America" refers colloquially to the United States of America. If you're talking about the continents, you'll add the North or South to it, and every other country on these continents just refers to themselves as their country. Our's happens to share its name with the continent it's on, and "The United States of America" is a mouthful. -
