Jobs are specialised, I would be pretty pissed if they still allowed jobs to use cross class skills, it wouldn't be much different than now.

They said that jobs would be more party based and classes would be more for small party and solo content, which to me suggests that jobs lack cross class skills.

There is a dev post the other day saying that the class skills will be able to be used while on job. I will see if I can find it. After reading all the posts I'm still feeling that its an unknown how it plays out at the moment, but thats half the fun ^^

They never, ever said we wouldn't be able to cross class skill on jobs. What they said, at any opportunity, is that cross-classing would be limited.

The latest translated post by Rein implies that it's what I suspected - we're limited in both the number of skills we can equip from other classes as well as the classes we can chose those skills from.

Essentially, as I hypothetical example, PLD can only equip 5 extra skills - and can only chose from CNJ and MRD. Such limitations would be perfectly acceptable.

It has indeed been said that jobs would be focused on party play and classes on soloing, however at the same time it's never been said how exactly this affects our ability to use cross-class skills.

Granted that what I'm about to say is purely conjecture since nothing has been officially announced, here is how I was thinking it could work :

Notice how each job gets FIVE skills, one at the unlocking of the job at 30, then one more at 35,40,45 and 50 ? And that to "activate" the job, we equip an item (most likely a "job stone") while currently playing as its related class ?

Well I've been thinking that it actually has TWO effects :

1- It affects your base stats according to the "focus" of the job.

2- It reduces your maximum number of equippable cross-class abilities by the same amount of skills granted by your current job stone's "level", which is determined by the number of quests you've completed on that job.

What it means, for example, is that if you unlock Paladin while you are a level 50 Gladiator, you'd get reduced maximum HP and increased defense by a percentage that's set by how the job works, and since you've just done the first quest, you get the first job skill, which implies that your ability to use cross-class abilities gets reduced from 10 to 9.

Then, as you "level" your job by doing the quests, like what seems to be planned, you get your number of equippable abilities reduced by one for every new job skill acquired, and so once you've completed all the paladin quests, for instance, you can only equip 5 cross-class abilities instead of 10.

My reason for thinking like that is that I think it may outbalance current game content if you completely lose all cross-class abilities by equipping jobs. For example, I'm not entirely sure a Paladin will tank better than a Gladiator without Provoke from Marauder, as none of the Paladin skills seem to be about increasing enmity. Also, if it's no longer possible to equip Raise, I see a sudden problem when fighting an instanced boss if no one can raise the White Mage...

That explains why I've been thinking it will use a system like the one I described. It seemed to make sense, at least to me. But feel free to disagree. :)

To OP: No, I've actually been motivating myself to level everything up to 50 before the patch hits just because I want to be able to have the most content available to me. Sitting around wasting time now just so I can spend the first few weeks of patch time doing stuff I could be doing now just sounds silly imo.

To SE: I'm going to rage/stay permanently on the job if class/job skillbars are not independent

Unrelated: I have completely stopped doing any GC stuff to get the remainder of the Sergant's gear until the patch though. I will run Toto-Rak into oblivion with my friends before I ever solo another Halatali leve -.-

Personally, I joined the game at the beginning of February after a brief fling with the beta due to hearing about the job system being implemented which was what I was waiting for ever since I played beta.

Anyhow, I'm planning on stalling out my MRD and GLD at 30 so I can level both warrior and paladin. If anybody is doing something similar on Besaid/Balmung or whatever server they are on post here!

At 30 you get the job stone and one job skill and then get the next 4 skills ever 5 levels which you have to quest for.

Totally missing the point since those of us holding back are more likely to prefer party play anyways.

What the above said. Apparently as we all know jobs will be tweaked for more traditional party play and that is what I am hoping for.

Regardless it appears as if there is a great amount of uncertainty over how these jobs actually work. It'll be great to fool around with them and try to differentiate fact from fiction.
