Are we saying it was ever funny?
Honestly i've wanted hildy to be gone from the second i met him. He never was amusing, then again humor is subjective so you can't really put a pin on it.
Hildibrand worked fine as a one off quest chain in ARR. I believe the developers didn't necessarily want to bring him back, though they did so due to so many people overrating the quest chain and demanding that it be brought back for Heavensward and then Stormblood. It's a shame it comes at the cost of other side quests. The Moogle Delivery stuff was far better, I feel, since it allowed us to catch up with NPC's we'd met in the past and fleshed them out further/offered resolutions to their story arcs. It was also a neat throwback to the side quests in FFIX.
I enjoyed him a lot in ARR, beared with it in HW (it still managed to get some genuine laughs out of me), but SB is kinda lacking. Maybe I'm getting tired of the same old jokes?
I actually thought ARR Hildy wasn't very funny. It got old after the first few quests.
I've been going through HW Hildy lately (yeah I'm way behind, but that's because of the above. Hard to prioritize something that makes me feel like I might be losing brain cells watching) and so far I find it a bit funnier.
So maybe it's just different styles? Humor is after all very subjective.
I really liked Hildy in ARR. In HW it seemed rushed like the devs put it there simply to have it, (which could be actually true) so it wasn't that great.
In SB I feel it's back to being good again and I look forward to the next set of quests.
He doesn't have any real villains in HW or SB which is sad. That is probably why
Personally, I enjoy it all for what it is: A chance for the devs to have some fun. The animators definitely got to have the most fun in ARR. I imagine after that, they're still enjoying being silly, but there's maybe more on their plate preventing them from doing as much as they'd like. Or maybe they just genuinely haven't had the right writers to really knock it out. But it's still fun for them, I'd like to think.
All his stories does is paint him as the "Buffon with a heart of gold" followed by a "Explodion-aholic loyal Ditz" who's shear preasence/involvment foils the bad guy's plan, its like shoving 2 characters from a comedy cartoon into a reality TV drama & getting them to solve stuff (which is techically Hildy's stick). I find it funny cause I know it sposta be funny... which somehow makes it funny? ugh my head hurts
at lest their now letting us treat him as the dead weight he is, slightly
