i have used this argument before, and will do so again happily. The Final Fantasy series as a whole has a certain visual appeal that somewhat transcends that of many other rpg's (or mmorpg's for that matter). To be against longer hair options seems akin to being against many of the memorable characters that have made the games so beloved by a great many players. After all would it not be tantamount to saying those character designs were not an important aspect of those characters?

These are just a very few FF characters over the years that have been arguably some of the most iconic designs in gaming history. Appreciation of those characters should be explicable in this ode to FF series that FFXIV is.
No one has outright said they're against longer hair options, infact ones like in Luna's post would be ideal. What most are against are when they are so wild and crazy that they just don't fit the setting, or so long that history in the game has proven they would be like having cardboard coming from your head that ends in paper. Tamed longer hair is ideal as long as you're ok with clipping issues, but when the hair basically takes up the entire character like the big black spikey knee length hair in those pics before, it's rather ridiculous and not pleasant at all in the setting.
Female Roegadyn actually have a style quite similar to that already, just straight rather than wavy. (I was tempted to use it for an alt character I made, but I was sure it would clip through *everything*....)
So that could just be a matter of unlocking race-unique hairstyles to be used for everyone - though I'm undecided whether that would be generally a good idea or not. It's nice for each race to have some additional unique features, but also nice to have everything accessible to everyone.
What is wild and crazy is unfortunately subject to taste. However we already have examples in game of very outlandish and eccentric hair.

Yes it is on a statue, and i believe it also exist in a painting, whatever the case it builds proof that such hair styles are part of the current in game world.

DREADLOCKS FOR MEN PLEASE.
Sadly I find it more than likely that there will just be a continuous trend where everyone gets short easy to do hairstyles that don't require much work to animate and won't clip as much. I just dismiss it as the character being "practical"
the very few long hairstyles we have are frighteningly rubber-like.. try the au ra hime-style with ninja wearing anything with a collar sometime if you haven't yet and you will see what i mean. it literally bends in half with the collar sticking through the middle.. and since almost /everything/ seems to have a collar that sticks up except a few rare pieces of gear prepare for your hair to look like it is defying gravity to stay in place almost regardless of what you play as.
I would /love/ long hairstyles, super long hairstyles in fact~ as I'd love to make a "warrior of light-primal" themed character (like someone idealized WoL) but honestly if they really wanted us to have those sorts of hairstyles they would have given us a couple like Ysayle has by now, or they would have put hers on the cash shop.
They need to fix the animations on the "long" styles they already have before adding anything else honestly..
Even my vintage ffxi mithra hairstyle clips and it /barely reaches the bottom of the neck/
I would love a FF14 without hair clipping. Sadly I suspect the technical hurdles to make it happen within the current engine may make it an impossible dream.
