You do realize people can turn off AFK status all together.... I never saw demands to remove that option. I have FC members that are AFK for days on end and it never says they're AFK. It's just fine.
I really don't see this as an oversight or necessary. Just my opinion.
I also find the shock of people at my stalker comments amusing. Can you guys not see how it comes off as creepy at all?? "I can't see if these people are AFK or not" Why does it matter? What are you doing? Staring at menus waiting for people to unAFK? Hahaha. Just /tell or speak to them, if they dont answer they dont want to talk to you or they're AFK. Mosey on.
Anyway that's just my 2 cents. Sorry to hurt some feefees. It was just a joke ;)
It's not creepy wanting to see somebody's status. I always check it before I send a /tell so I don't end up wasting time by trying to send to someone who is in an instance.
I run a small FC which means I get a lot of /tells. Since I use the idling camera when I go afk, people can't see if I'm online. If I'm in a city and somebody has been spamming emotes I can very easily miss a /tell even if I remember to scroll up and check the chat log when I return. If people could see when I'm afk it would make it a lot easier.
Similarly, if we want to run a raid but only have 6 or 7 members, I usually send /tells to friends in other companies asking them to join us. It really helps if I can see who is afk. Waiting around to see if you are going to get a response before asking the next person on the Friend's List and then waiting all over again isn't a lot of fun.
Why would there be demands to remove the option to turn off AFK? If people don't want to show that they're AFK, that's their prerogative. The AFK status is there to tell people, "I'm not here, I probably won't reply for a while." What's different about the Camera Mode status is that now, it doesn't necessarily mean they're actively using the camera. Are they using the camera or are they just AFK? Who knows?
All I want is for people to know that I'm AFK if I'm actually AFK. If I go auto-AFK, my status is set to Camera Mode. What then, is the point of the AFK status for people who also enjoy the auto-AFK idle camera feature?
I can understand the creepy comments in this thread, I just think they're unfounded. I doubt anyone is actually staring at their screen waiting for people to go un-AFK, that's just something that you're projecting onto the people supporting my idea. I just want to alleviate confusion, nothing more. No "feefees" were hurt, but thanks for being condescending about it.
So annoying when someone's like "What are you recording?" and I see their message 20 mins or more when I get back.
I sometimes just hang out waiting for chat sound and pop out of afk so.. Don't get the big deal. Just a quick simple "are you there?" if you actually want to talk to the person should suffice.
