but then looking at the list of laptops that's been mentioned in this thread, that conclusion doesn't surprise me.

If you want serious gaming on the laptop, then you gotta cough up the dough. There ones mentioned in this thread are decent general performers, but not exactly designed with gaming in mind. On the nvidia side, the 540/550M just doesn't have much power, a 560M should be the minimum. There are plenty of laptop vendors that sells laptops based on sager/clevo/asus/msi chassis that packs plenty of power, they're just not cheap.

My laptop sputters when i play the game in fullscreen, but if i play in windowed mode, even if it's the same resolution, it runs smoothly on standard settings. It's not really a gaming laptop, but it does have upper mid-level specs.

I do agree with PC all the way, but when i was at University I needed a laptop for its mobility and wanted to play FFXIV spent £700 on it.

And when I am running FFXIV I can hear the fans when I'm outside lol.

PCs are far superior in specs and ability to cool them, if you done need a laptop then get a PC or if you have the money get both.

This is pretty much how it is. You can also go Alienware, but be VERY WARNED you will be paying MORE for what you get, easily.

Mine has a 980X and Dual 480M GPUs, the 990X and 5xx series weren't out when I got mine. It struggles playing the game at what I consider acceptable settings on my 30" monitor while my desktop is out of commission, but at it's native screen res or even 1920x1200 it runs as well as can be expected.

I also don't need the extra power adapter, except for a few rare circumstances. Running FFXIV on my 30" at 2560x1600 with the laptop display still turned on causes the adapter to trip. If I turn the internal display off it doesn't, but it doesn't perform as well as i'd like at that resolution. Wish I could get a job and paycheck soon so I can pay the extra power usage of my desktop and use that.

That's where I bought mine too.

I run this game with two ATI HD5970's. I wouldn't trade it for anything else.

And how long have you had this laptop? How long do you expect it to last before overheating sends it to its grave?

Do you have an AC unit running under it while playing graphic-intensive games?

Y'all missed my point. Current generation laptops will die if used extensively for gaming due to the profile they're limited in. Until cooling technology improves a great deal, they are not viable for long-term endurance.

/sigh, fail, fail, and more fail.

The only laptops that'd fail from "extensive gaming" would be the ones that are poorly designed, shoddily constructed machines that only pretends to be designed for gaming. Yes, the form factor has relatively limited thermal profile (which btw still varies greatly depending on the actual engineered design), but then again that's what mobile version of cpu/gpu are designed to work with. You get less performance, but also less heat generated. Any gaming system worth its salt will deliver the rated performance while keeping itself within the thermal envelop. And as long as chips operates within its rated temp, longevity is not an issue.

If what you claim is true, then there must be a mountain pile of complaints about failing sager/clevo, and more recently asus/msi gaming laptops by now... except there isn't. I'd strongly suggest you to actually go out and do some actual research instead of holding on to... whatever it is that led you to this rather disconnected view.


poor design and maintenance kills laptops, games doesn't.


FYI, my overclocked gaming laptop is well into its 3rd year and is doing just fine, and no, it doesn't have an ac running underneath it :rolleyes:
