Didn't they say it's going to be a cross between caster and melee dps class?
Indeed, but all classes can auto attack, so 13 out of 13 jobs can be physical melee. It's just not fair!
@OP, I too would love a magic DPS. Something like necromancer, mesmer or ritualist from Guild Wars would be amazing! I highly doubt we'll get anything like that though :( Even red mage, as Tint said, is a sword fighter first (traditionally).
Currently there is only ONE tank that uses the darkness.
The other two use either the light, or rage.

We have 4 Caster DPS. yes MCH and BRD are casters now.
Saying they shouldnt be lumped together with BLM and SMN is like saying PLD shouldnt be lumped with DRK and WAR.
While I DO want more Mages, I'm not going to pretend there isnt enough ranged casters.
I'm guessing OP wants an Offensive-centric, spell based mdps other than blm and smn. Going by the FF series jobs, that would mean a class like Magus or Sage. Outside of that realm, you have your chaos mages, your 'mancers, etc
Personally, I would've loved playing a mdps casting dark/chaos spells but with DRK already in this game, those dreams are dashed
There are a wide variety of magic users in the FF world but they've combined/folded a lot of them here in this game. The "upgrade" jobs -- White Wizard, Devout, etc -- may not apply as they've phased those out of the series over time in favor of simply giving their abilities to the original job. Blue Mage has already been discussed to death and Red Mage is 99.99% likely to be on the way. They've been teasing Sorcerer/Spell Fencer for quite a while now. I'm talking since 1.0's opening video and just recently with the Devout of Darkness (though perhaps it was just a reference). So unless Red Mage gets that ability, which it might, I have to figure that at SOME point, we're gonna get it.
And I'm with you here. I agree that AST is Eorzea's version of Time Mage. They just didn't call it by that name for two reasons: there is no support role in this game and that's what Time Mages are so they had to combine/add a few things, and because they probably got tired of people saying "That's not how this job played in other games." Folks need to remember that Time Magic is not exclusively Haste/Slow. Time Mages use what's called Time/Space Magic, and AST is that.
Malefic/II is their version of Comet. Lightspeed is Quick. Arrow and Spear are functional Haste/Speed spells. They have a couple Regen spells. Celestial Opposition is an approximation of Stop. Time Dilation. Disable. Gravity. Most of the spells that are left are all Space/Celestial related. They are missing a Slow spell, but Stella has Heavy, I guess.
Not to mention the final AST quest battle.
I would like some nature magic damage job. A damage conjuror of sorts.
Would love a mage that uses combos similar to the melees, not dot management, 1 button spamming or proc based, actual combos. If they did this and maybe made it a psychic i might consider playing a mage
