I love that your central thesis is how people will react when they're BORED. Imagine people playing an MMO but being bored. How about logging off?
Anyway I agree with you that looking around and seeing people jumping does look silly. However, jumping is entertaining to do. I don't feel that anyone should have that hampered just because it looks silly.
If Jump won't actually have a real function then they shouldn't waste time developing it.

just tie jumping to a stamina of sorts so you can't spam it. Lowering speed would be cool too.
To the OP.
When my group is waiting for anything, I tend to pace back and forth or run circles around people.
I've received a few complaints about how I should "Sit still."
ADD aside, jumping when bored is accompanied by something else annoying in it's place.
The BETTER solution isn't to get rid of basic travel ability, but instead add something for people bored, aka people have been asking for mini games (other than parley) for friggin ever.
They could add a delay in the animations so jumping can't be spammed. Make the character stumble or pause in movement when they land.
If they use jump to cancel spells I'm rage quitting, getting on a plane to japan and kneeing yoshi in the groin.
I've never seen this much energy put into one emote.
There are lots of games that use jumping effectively. And even Call of Duty has a jumping cooldown (to some extent). But unfortunately the information released so far concerning FFXIV's iteration of jump looks completely stupid and pointless and ugly.

Can't believe people are still whining about jump. I mean give it a rest already, if you decide to quit over it and you've been playing since launch... Well then, I call BS. You're nothing more than a whiner and you're going to continue to play because you obviously have the patience to stick with this game through all the garbage before it. I'm quite sure there were worse things than jump yet the whiners are still playing.
