Roegadyn ninja?

I found that for me anything taller than the shortest (female) Elezen option ends up looking a bit odd or overly lanky.

The shortest option, on the other hand, is around the same as a female Highlander that is about 3/4th the way up the height bar. Still feels distinctly Elezen, but not as awkwardly proportioned (in my opinion). If you're mid-range or taller, I'd say try creating an alt at the shortest height and running around for a bit to see what you think.

If you are already the shortest you can be and don't like it, on the other hand, Miqo'te or Au Ra are your best choices if Highlander is off the table (which is a shame - I constantly debate with myself whether or not I want to switch the Highlander, as I really like them, but I also really like how this particular character looks as an Elezen, so I just keep putting the decision off).

I'd like to think that, when it's implemented, Roes will make great Samurais, right?

Why not embrace the roe size and get armored up some?

That's the monk set, but ninja has an identical set with a different default color that you can dye.

There are bits and pieces of it in the game (not as much as I'd like, to be honest)...right now your biggest source will actually be the Au Ra section of the Race Naming Conventions thread (it's a stickied one so easy to find) in the Lore sub-forum. Describes how their names work, so the lore for the Raen is still a bit sparse (the 50-60 Ninja quest adds a bit to the Raen as well)...but the Xaela? There's 51 main tribes and you get a bit of info on each one of them along with the tribe name (canonically Xaela use their tribe name as their surname).

Some of the Xaela tribes are a bit odd, I'll just say that much.

Fem Miqo'te and fem Au Ra are the best imo for ninja. Can make em look so good that the target cannot help be distracted from the fact they are currently bleeding (very heavily) to death.

Roes are too... punch, smash, chop, then roast the giant beastie on a spit and have a BBQ.

More, nobody suspect roe to BE ninja, best disguise ever!
If you give up to look good because the "what people think" it's sad.
Since i main healers, lots of people said :" roe should be WAR or PLD, not healer"

I'm gonna have to go ahead and disagree with the OP in regards to tall characters not making good looking ninjas. I'm the tallest Au'Ra male I can be and I think my ninja looks awesome!

Roegadyn Ninjas are hilarious. Everytime I see them in duty I can't stop laughing. They're cute.

I admit I only find Midlanders, Miqo'te and female Au Ra to be fitting of the class as far as aesthetics go, but I did once see an edit of a Roeg ninja and it stood out to me for looking so good even considering his lumbering size.
