The way materia is spread out between different quests is kind of a hassle if you are looking for certain types of materia. Did mine today looking for crit materia and had to go to every beast tribe to get 5 crit and 1 determination. Was hoping each tribe would have certain ones for every quest so you would know where to go to get the ones you want.

I only use tier IV materia for overmelds, personally. And that's only available on crafted gear. -

And I'd say in there its irrelevant. A 6% increase in damage using grade V's in theory translates to way less in reality. How many attacks are wasted because the mob dies before your attack hits? Also you can meld in Grade X's which tripple your attack power but that wond speed up all the time you spend in dungeons running up to the next mob or the waiting time before a boss to let mp/tp refill. So an increase of 6% in damage will never decrease the time a duty takes with 6%.
Also we get just the 1 grade V materia a week from void ark. And while you can get them from diadem its a huge grind to get enough spoils to meld all your gear. Buying off the marketboard is not really an option because of materia prices.
You could say meld in grade IV but do you really want to spend gil on that for a marginal increase just to replace it later?
Also the big reason why a lot of the people i know are holding off on melding gear is the uncertainty if the melded lore gear will keep its melded materia when upgraded later on to ilvl 240.
Also by the time you're fully outfitted in melded gear using the weekly void ark drop its almost 3 months later and we'll have another patch with a new level of token gear.
So dont be too harsh on people who dont meld their gear, to some its simply not worth it really. -

Materias are lost. You dont upgrade the gears, you trade them with an item for better ones.

If I meld my i230 gear it'll just be IV materia, when you upgrade to i240 you'll lose your melds so it's not a huge importance for me yet also the prices in the my are outrageous T.T

To be brutally honest, the only people I can see actually using materia in any amount on end game gear are those healers able to dance the line between healing and damage dealing. Healer equipment has a stark lack of accuracy and materia can easily make up the difference. But, again, it's not something they'd likely want to do on pre-upgraded equipment given the cost.
