did we need another one of these threads? post it in the ongoing thread about DPS'ing
You know you don't have to be this toxic, right? It's not like the OP didn't try to DPS while healing. She has TRIED. But she just can't get it right. The playstyle is not right for her. Who are you to judge her in such a toxic way? While yes, there are plenty of other threads she could have posted in, that doesn't mean you give up common courtesy.
She's not wrong either. The current meta in Savage IS to maximise DPS as a healer far more than Coils ever did. There aren't as many tankbusters, there aren't as much outgoing raid damage in comparison. Instead, there are DPS checks everywhere.
If you're expecting every healer to function on the level as Elysium's healers, I have some bad news for you.
Great, someone who can't read criticism.
Judging OP to not be able to dps? I judge OP to give up on healing because someone(newb) said that dpssing is mandatory, but theres shitton of examples who don't dps at all, except at the start where you put on aero III, II and I, then never touch cleric stance again during the whole fight. Saying to give up on healing because of dpssing means you never healed only and let yourself being influenced by people who probably have no idea what they talking about.
While you don't have to function on the same level as elysiums healer, you don't have to dps as a whm, because there are other ways to handle it and if you don't come to that level even with a co-healer helping you occasionally, then you are not fit to heal. Someone who says i give up healing because i cant heal only because of current meta is giving me, sorry for that, cancer.
Long story, short meaning:
you can heal only and even let your co-helper help you out, except at the start of the fight, where you put regen on the tank and activate all 3 aeros.
The only thing being a career healer provides with this game is you're already comfortable doing it. There's no anxiety. What else you know from other games cannot be applied to this game..
What you are describing there is the basic class role -- not the meta.
I get that you're trying to be the nice guy, but don't spread ignorance about definitions.
The prefix "meta-"
http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/meta?show=1
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/meta
Key words: more than, beyond, highly organized, specialized, higher level, altered
As far as "metagame" is concerned, the tl;dr definition would be that it's whatever the current accepted theorycrafted play styles are.
Call me insensitive or whatever, but IMO it's disrespectful to the thread starter's intellect and dignity to give them such...whitewash in an attempt to make them feel better. That's something one would do to a small child, which I doubt the thread starter is.
I think it just takes practice though, as I DPS whenever I can and never feel like it's too hard. You just get to know when it's safe to pop CS quick and get that Aero III up. I only do Alex normal, not into savage, but it definitely does make a difference. Like beating down Oppressor, the lower you get him before he calls 0.5 with the same HP the better, as lower Oppressor is, the lower 0.5 is. Same with when they are both up or getting unbalanced, like Opp at 30% and 0.5 at 20%. I just focus on Opp and spam Stone III, and trust me it helps huge as WHM DPS is still pretty powerful. Even if you don't do it at all, there's definitely so many times where you have ample safety blanket to DPS. Even Faust at the start until it's at like 50% or so, pop Regen on the tanks and DPS away as otherwise you'd literally be just standing there.
What helps for me playing on PS4 is I always keep CS on the far left hotbar, so left D-Pad with R2, and then I use X for Stone III. So I can quickly hold down R2 hit Left to flip into CS, and then keeping R2 down hit X over and over to spam Stone III until CS is off cooldown and then just hit the left D-Pad again to drop out of CS. You just have to put more focus on the tank while you do it so they don't get too low. Keep in mind you have Benediction as well right there which works also while in CS should the tank or someone get too low. There's definitely times where I pop CS only to have the tank start taking big damage to think crap and have to basically stand there for 1-2 seconds waiting for it to drop, but it's still so rare. I DPS ALL the time only because I feel like I have to or I'd be just standing around, but I have never ever had someone tell me to stop, or to do it. Healing is the #1 requirement, so as long as you're doing that then no one can say anything. The class just isn't so hard that you can't DPS is all.
Shame you weren't able to balance healing and DPSing. I understand it's not for everyone. Good luck with your future endeavours on SMN and I hope you continue to have fun. :)
Knowing what you like and what you are good and bad at is important. Kudos to your self awareness. For better or worse, in FFXIV DPS is everyone's job, not just the dps. I hope you enjoy SMN.
Although after playing SMN for a while, go back and give your healers a spin. You may find dpsing on SMN has the added benefit of helping you be comfortable with doing the same on your healer.
I've always dps'd when I wanted to. I tend to run pugs all the time so not knowing the capabilities of the tanks or dos usually has me being more conservative in how I play. If I don't want to dps, then I don't. In the end it only shaved off five minutes if I had dps'd. If someone doesn't like how I play, there is a vote kick for a reason and my que is small compared to the 5-10 min they will waste standing around for a healer that has "party in progress" check marked.
