Uhm.. this is routine imo. Sometime before the December 2004 update in FFXI, SE had to do a ton of emergency maintenance(most of which were to combat DDoS), some were 8 hours long. After awhile you get used to it. At least they care enough to do these things, while some dev teams out there just let the servers run on auto-pilot.
If I were them I'd be kinda inclined to merge the first patch maintenance time slot with the ISP instability. If they're working down to the wire they could put anything unfinished into the next patch session which is only a day or two later. There will probably be emergency maintenances as well (as there usually is after patches) so this isn't looking like it'll be a good week to play in general.
Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the patches and if the lag being worse than usual lately will be fixed too that's a big yay from me! I just like things being organised in a way that results in less constant issues.
