I have recently been spending some of my spare time exploring other MMORPGs, so far the one with the best pet implementation has been Rappelz. Some of the basic Ideas of Rappelz could easily be applied to pets when added to FFXIV. This may detract from FFXIV's uniqueness, but most of the basics are simple things people have been asking for already from SE.
1. Pets are not class specific or unique, everyone can have a pet
2. Pets can equip items
3. Pets evolve after certain levels (not pokemon evolution, but more bad-ass looking versions of the same pet)
4. In their final evolution pets can be used as mounts.
#4 would need a lot of thought before implementation, since it would detract from the value of chocobos.
As for the others, people have been asking for similar things in FFXI after pets were implemented and some of these ideas were already implemented.
I.E. Pets w/ equipment (Puppets), With DRGs then complaining about a lack of equipment for their wyverns
Pet Evolution (Puppets), with the different head and body types allowed for variation to a single pet.
Either way pets should come after everything else is balance, and should be available to everyone to keep game balance.

I'd like to bring back the Chocobo Breeding, and have my own personal bird that has lots of distinct looks, as they did in XI. However... While I think the mounts should be kept to our beloved birds, I'm all for pets.
Actually, I was kind of hoping my Pathway Partner would serve more along like the Adventuring Fellow in XI. Having the ability to have your own permanent pet though... That would have been fun. I had always though Pankration would have caught on more had they allowed you to actually call your beast. I'd like to something that lets you call and customize, heck, maybe even trade pets. Like, say you're out fighting Gnats one day, and the Gnat drops a Gnat egg. You could take it to a beast stable, and then the stable master would take it, hatch it for you, and then you could name and raise your gnat, and have it learn specific spells. And to call it you use your Beast Whistle. Meanwhile, you could maybe even have a Beast Master like class that actually boosted the pet's abilities (as that would be their main weapon.)
There's lots of cool things you can do with pets. -

I'd prolly prefer the beastmaster class over this, but ony if i could actually
have my summoned beast out even inside the city.
I mean it's always nice if u manage to charm some rare mob & ofc you wanna show it off to everyone. ^^

Beastmaster pets should also have their seperate Equip/ability window.
Where they can rank up & learn new skills, equip collars, leg protection etc.
Maybe even get the beastmaster a whip this time around, just for the coolness of a Whip ofc. -

An Idea would be to integrate Pets and Mounts.
Mini-quest at predetermined level (25 phys) to get a Chocobo chick.
Which could sit on your shoulder, or follow you around.
Each level you gain, you need to return to the initial quest giving NPC to pay a Gil and/or item fee to 'raise' your Chocobo.
Once your Chocobo is of sufficient level (Player lvl 30 phys), it can switch from a pet that sits on your shoulder/walks behind/flys around with you to a summon-able mount for use outside of cities. -

I know, it's so blasphemous to suggest a mount besides chocobos in an FF game. But one can dream! And this Lala would love to have a Snurble Steed. (free ride AND buffs? {yes, please!}
*BUT* this is an FF license, so chocobos are the natural steed of choice. So I propose this: Remember the Christmas/Holiday chocos? they had the saddle bags? Turn those puppies into Lala side-cars! I'll be able to ride b*tch on my LS mates' chocos, and it will be AWESOME!
