What do you mean even Wildstar? Did anyone really ever expect anything else from NCsoft?
Honestly, I wouldn't worry about this at all. Games which came out after ARR going F2P isn't a sign that ARR might go F2P, it's a sign of ARRs utterly astounding success. I may not agree with everything Yoshida says or does to the game, but the man took perhaps the worst MMO in the genres history and turned it into possibly the best attempt at dethroning WoW. No ARR isn't even close to achieving that, but that is just testament to WoWs utter domination more than anything. ARR is perhaps the only MMO I can think of which has gone head to head against WoW for subscription fees and hasn't gone F2P within a year.
Unless there is some previously unheard of innovation, F2P basically hinges on balancing between having Cash Shop content that is desirable to purchase, but not game breaking for people who do not buy said content.
Depending on the game type, this can be difficult. Games like LoL & WoT pull it off quite well, but many (most?) F2P MMORPGs often go overboard with extremely potent cash shop items, lottery boxes, and ways to circumvent what would otherwise be impossibly bad RNG.
I have never played it or researched it in anyway.
But isnt Destiny like a successful modern day b2p mmo?
This type of model seems like the one that will take off, pay for content instead of every month. Casual friendly as well. Maybe wildstar has made enough from its subs now it will go F2P to attract more potential customers that would not touch it with its sub fee.
Yoshi P is one of the most outspoken anti-f2p game devs out there.
And his reasoning for it is pretty much the best one.
Would you rather the devs be working on the best content they can or the best ways to wring money out of the playerbase?
Also a game that is surpasses expectations by a wide margin is a lot more likely to keep up their standards than a game that goes out of it's way to fail at every turn.
Isnt this hypocritical when FF14 has a cash shop that has been updated and will most likely continue to receive more time from the devs in the future.Quote:
