I don't know why, but display own name in FFXI wasn't annoying for me, though in FFXIV it does a lot, I think it has something to do with the size.

/thumbs-up to the UI team... on the work done so far...
Surely there are things that we the players clammer for, but I have to say, it's not a bad job in terms of the quality of the UI.
But, I must say, I too would like to add my 2cent of a vote in support of own name on/off switch would be a nice addition.
