Whats wrong with some discussion? SE need to have balance in mind when they add the new abilities and job.
Speculation is nice. Making outlandish claims that AST will obsolete WHM before we've even seen an ability list is not good discussion material.
I save judgment on this topic until I can see what AST brings to the table. My WoW druid roots would like AST to be a HoT healer though.
I'm struggling like hell to understand where this argument comes from. There are balance problems in this game. But, this isn't one of them. My opinion is that WHM and SCH complement each other extremely well. And, WHM is not weaker, less capable, or less desirable than SCH. They are different jobs and thus, their utility is situational. But, you're out of your mind if you think the majority of the content currently in this game is easier without a WHM in your party.
And, why are people speculating that Astrologian will make WHM irrelevant? We know NOTHING about how the job will work. I'd think that SE is smart enough not to make the original main healing job in ARR redundant.
If groups start preferring one combination more than another, SE will make adjustments. Remember when people didn't want warriors in coil? SE eventually found ways to balance the two...
So, that will happen with the healers with the addition of a new healer... and the tanks with the addition of a new tank...
Just as the dps were adjusted with the addition of a new dps.
Right now, WHM + SCH are the perfect team. Scholars are preemptive, and mitigation-minded. White mages are reactive (although it does help to know the rotation) and huge heals heavy, although they don't have much mitigation (besides stoneskin, which is a longer cast than adloq and not a heal). The addition of astrologian will mean...? We don't know what direction they're taking this in. Who would have thought SMN would be a dot class? :) As others have said, all classes/jobs will be obtaining new abilities, and those abilities will probably help us understand the balance they plan to implement.
Well that wasn't really my statement, however. I was making conclusions based on whatever sharazisspecial posted before and in other topics concerning "white mage's inferiority to scholar" - What I understood from it anyway.
But as of my speculations: It'll go two ways.
First of all: If future raids are staying the same as they are now, white mage will have a permanent raid spot. Looking at BCOB, SCOB and FCOB, White Mages slowly become more and more necessary for the content. Especially when still progressing. This becomes exceptionally apparent in FCOB Turn 4 (also known as Turn 13).
Alternatively: Content will be designed in a way that can be done with either healer combination. While one combination pair may make certain content easier, it's not impossible. In a sense, this also applies with FCOB: You could run two White Mages or even two scholars for any turn if you really want to. It's just awkward and not as efficient. But not completely impossible. May need to spam succor 4 times to match a Cure III when stacking for gigaflare. But hey, that seems feasible, right? This is simply because there's a certain role distribution that a lot of terrible healers are not aware of. There's this thing called Main healer and Supportive healer. Obviously, no scholar in it's right mind will spam succor to top everyone off, as mentioned before. But one scholar has to do it. Or they both just do their own thing and healing will be a bit awkward and the party, or tank in particular, won't feel safe because the healing synergy is terrible.
Please don't call it reactive as if they wait there with a thumb up their hiney and then press a button. White mages have to anticipate just as much as Scholars do.
As a SCH main, having a WHM over another scholar in a party makes me breathe easier. AOE damage is the bane of scholars, and when lustrate is used up and need another 30 seconds on another Aether flow, panic ensues. I'm not the best sholar out there, but I can't sit on a lustrate when half the party is under 35% health and double succor is just a waste.
Who knows about what the Astroligian will bring, heck, it could even put us out of business. I just don't see WHM being replaced for anything.

Not trying to undermine your point as WHM IS necessary in progression, but this has happened. T13 in the works.
