I think as long as you have the action bar up and are targetting a mob with your weapon out you will hit them. I was doing it while not locked on (camera-wise).

i just get next to them, it will tell me im too far away if i lock on them from far, maybe it just takes a long time to start the first hit. i dunno. I do mostly use gamepad though, but it would still be better with an attack on/off button imo. and the first hit should be instant as long as you didnt just hit something else.
Agree with OP 100%
Like I said in another topic, there needs to be a text command for attack (or whatever you want to call that Enter keystroke after you've targetted the mob and in battle mode). At the very least I want to make a macro:
/bm on
/attack <t>
Sigmakan beat me to it. Macros ftw.. I have a gaming keyboard and attacking a mob is but a button away.
EDIT: misunderstood some of it.
People please stop saying "just use a gamepad" >.<. It's counterproductive and doesn't fix anything lol.
I personally love using the keyboard up until now and I would like them to help fix it so both keyboard and gamepad can be a viable choice. The developers shouldn't try to limit our choices of controlling the game, I bought this game for the computer not PS3 and I wouldn't think that entitles using a gamepad.
Besides this isn't a fix that will take months so you really only hurt people who want to use the keyboard when you just push for using a controller...
Different people are different. But I have a much easier time playing this game with a keyboard and mouse. The only time I whip out the gamepad is if I'm gathering. Targeting on the gamepad feels terrible to me. Just clicking on whatever makes things so much easier.
If they ever get around to setting any button (including shift+, ctrl+, alt+ buttons) for the eaction slots 1-30 (instead of just 0-9), I'll be in heaven. That and allowing offensive spells to just start casting after a single press instead of being required to confirm the target.
Really it's the same awkward engaging with controller & keyboard anyway. Perhaps adjusting to the change is easier with controller? But either way, you don't have that go-to starter attack with the other classes. So you have those moments of wondering if auto-attack is gonna kick in. I've gotten used to it now though. Knowing I need to bring up the action bar to get it started, and to not have the action bar activated when cycling targets so I don't attack something I don't want to. It's another case of over-complicating things when it's unnecessary though.
Simplifying the process would be helpful for both controller & keyboard users.
Im all for it!
I've also found sometimes after being slept.. my auto attack does not resume at all until i go passive and back to active, anyone else seeing this? or am i being stupid?
