Don't feel bad. This is not a commonly used word, even in English. I had no idea it was pronounced the same way (and had the same meaning) as "jail" until about a month ago, and I consider myself to be very well-read.

I knew it was pronounced this way but it doesn't bother me when people say it differently.
I really don't get it why people get their panties in a twist about it.
