I really hope he requires you to use Relic/Relic Zenith to fight him, and losing means you lose that weapon. It would boost the market for the base weapons for the quest, if nothing else (assuming Relics are still going to be something continually upgraded). Though seeing people lose Allagan weapons would be hilarious... It would beg the question though, what could he possibly reward players with to make fighting him worth the risk? Maybe make him part of the upgrade process for the next tier of Relic upgrades... The Gilgamesh trial drops Radz-at-Han Quenching Oil+1 maybe...

I should stop dreaming, he is part of a sidequest. Zero chance he'll have any impact like that, I should just expect a Trial with Odin like rewards to turn in for vanity weapons...

Well, judging by his brief dialogue at the end of the current Hildibrand questline, he seems he's searching for

the 'blade of light', which to me means he's obviously heard of the 'prophecy' from Louisoix's journal, which ironically was nothing but a metaphor for the player. So maybe I'm just reading too far into it, but it seems the reason he's beating up adventurers because he's misunderstood this metaphor for a real sword.

But I would be disappointed if there is an ilevel requirement for this (which it most probably would have) - it would restrict what is supposed to be a humorous sidestory to simply being connected to endgame stuff. But ah well, I guess we'll see.

If you mean the legendary Sword Excalibur then yes Gilgamesh is still looking for Excalibur since this is Pre-Excalibur Gilgamesh.

His life long goal is to find the legendary sword Excalibur and it is one of the reasons why he fights people and take their weapon if he defeats them.

Ever since he was sent into the Void by Ex-death Gilgamesh learned how to use the Void to travel into different Final Fantasy worlds and allows him to change his appearance in each different FF world. However, Time moves differently for Gilgamesh due to the void which is why Post-Excalibur Gilgamesh can exists in FF8 being that it is far into Gilgamesh's timeframe while all other appearance has been Pre-Excalibur Gilgamesh being set before he found Excalibur.

Screw Gilgamesh, everyone cares about Enkidu Chicken more!
