Just FFXI fans in my selfish opinion. Some people who just played the FF rpgs have a very different mindset then FFXI players (some not all, I'm not speaking in absolutes so if you find yourself outside of my stereotype congratulations lol). I've heard whole flame forums from just FFrpgers about how XI robbed Tactics of its number, and how MMOs are dumb and XIV doesn't deserve a numbered title, not saying they're all like this, but how many of them want to play mmos?
Fans of just mmos aren't the same, a lot of people believe paying for mmos is dead, to me that implies having a mmo run it servers efficiently must be a dead concept too. (lol) Most of the people I knew playing XIV or met in XIV played XI, the ones that didn't play XI weren't seeing XIV as a long term game, they hop games every two years. >.< that's odd to me.
Of course I'm only talking from personal experience and not a statistical survey so be too harsh.

If you want to appeal to FF fans, you have to make a Final Fantasy-themed MMO. However, that cannot come at the expense of making a fun game. There have been a lot of advances in MMOs since FFXI released, and just because this is meant to be a FF game doesn't mean they should be ignored.
Basically, SE cannot focus so much on the Final Fantasy part that they forget the MMO part. You might bring in the fans with the theme, but you can only keep them through solid gameplay. -

Ok say FF did copy the successful MMO formula, we'd have WoW, replaced with FF mobs and lore, and a few differences to make it feel like an FF game.
