Someone doesn't remember Gridania in the original
I cant tell much about the repetition of zone, because i was only in the close betas and in the open one and that was relative small amount of time. Also im not saying that version 1.0 is better, ah the horror for me as pc user to control the charcter with those controller fast settings :)
It just that im missing this huge open space wihere you could walk and explore more! And that nice feeling when you walk outside of the city to the field zone with no loading screen, it was such a nice experiance !
I really hope in future they make the filed zone alot larger and maybe only for the zones near the cities that you walk out of the city with no loading screen i really do hope !!!!
But you people here dont give me much hope for happening !
Still i want to tank you all for taking your time answering (^.^)
I still can't grasp how people can say 1.0 overworld was amazing with a straight face, did they only play for 5 minutes? The terrain way copy pasted to hell and way back over and over and over, caves? They were the same freaking cave turned around with three freaking moles in them, ramps in Thanalan? the whole section was copy pasted for every ramp, it was horrible and anyone who says 1.0 overworld is better than 2.0 either didn't play or barely touched 1.0 and didn't notice it.
Just a little reminder of what La Noscea was like back then.

That shit was EVERYWHERE.
As i said be for i didnt had time to play a lot,i was only in the betas, and they were short with a lot of problems ! So i pusonaly cant say a thing about the repeat !
But it seem a lot of people including me, were are missing the huge open space of the old world and the better textures ! What if they make the worlds big as the version 1.0 but unique like in version 2.0 !
Would not be this great ! I pursonaly like the worlds in version 2.0 but with that size and the loading screens i feel like i run in small square, you dont really need a chocobob for transportation, and you may feel some times claustraphobic !
But all this is my pursonal opinion and taste !!!
1.0 map design:

Sure, the maps in ARR could be bigger, but I'm more for loading screens than for loading canyons. Canyons that only exist to give the client time to load the next area while the player run throught it.
Oh great, another "the areas aren't gigantic enough" thread.
For ARR, they opted for smaller, more-well-crafted areas instead of having giant areas that required lots of reuse of textures and terrain chunks to make ("copy-pasta"). There's no point in having a giant area when you don't have enough assets and content to fill it with.
The old areas are just bigger- they aren't more beautiful. They are very boring because everything is so spread out and you only see the same terrain repeated over and over and over. It just plain baffles me how anyone could like it better. ARR's areas are actually thoughtfully designed with more beauty and detail in one square foot than 1.0s areas have in their entirety.
Another thing is because they were designing smaller areas with zoning instead of large mostly contiguous areas they were able to get rid of those awful 'loading corridors'. Remember Uldah in 1.0? how you had to walk through those long side tunnels (which still exist but are blocked off) and the main gates were closed? Now they could open the main gate since they didn't need the loading corridors anymore. All over the game you had long narrow spaces that served to mask the transfer from one area to another on the server side. But since there was never anything in these spaces (and players nearby crossing at the same time would momentarily vanish) it was just meaningless padding.
You have to sacrifice details to make areas bigger. Most wide-open-world games are single player as a result (Oblivion, Skyrim for example, where you've seen one cave or house, you've seen them all)
Because forcing people to take indirect routes through long corridors to so obviously mask loading / area transfer is just SO much more immersive. Personally I'm happy i can just walk out the gate instead of having to walk a mile to cover a distance that could otherwise be covered in 5 seconds. Seriously, it sticks out like a sore thumb and cancels out any immersion bonus. On top of this, 1.0 STILL HAD LOADING SCREENS ANYWAY.Quote:
You are so right. Looking at a black loading screen while you do nothing is so much more immersive and better design than actually moving through the world and the game designers designing the world in such a way that you don't have to stop and wait like this is a game from 10 years ago.
My reaction to anyone liking 1.0 areas better is exactly the same. I don't know how anyone could ever disagree with ARR's areas being far superior. It's crazy.Quote:
