The companion only showed up in the original main story quests from Tanaka (not the 7th umbral story quests from Yoshida) after level 20. The companion was your partner during the main story quests like the Scion NPCs in ARR. They talked for you in the CS to other NPCs and fighted with you the enemies in the main story quests.

Wow this thread grew rather fast.

I like to hear that everyone else misses their companions as well. I certainly hope we get to see them in the future. Maybe we can get them to address this in one of the future live letters?

Still might be nice to have something like them back. While I don't at all remember who my path companion was, it would be kinda nice to have something like your adventuring fellow from XI in the game. Something to occupy that Companion tab more than just your chocobo.

I would rather have the 1.0 companion than the chocobo to fight with me D:

I cant remember what dungeon it lead up to, but there was a small cutscene about a group of NPC adventurers that lost their tank because he rushed ahead and the healer couldnt do anything, and they were just sitting at the table being terrible to her, I wanted to just hug her and bring her with me everywhere, I was actually hoping i could but nope D:

The 1.0 companions were only available in select story missions. Once you were done with the story, you never saw them again. They were essentially a story NPC. The only thing that differentiated them from any other story NPC was that you could choose their name and personality (which by extension determined what they looked like.) I.e. it was kind of gimmicky.

Name and Class.
You choosed a class, then random races with the choosed class were showed to you and you picked one.
Personality was dependent on the race and gender.

Guessing they didn't make it then the meteor hit. However now we just replaced them with chocobos.

I miss my little Lalafell friend, she was cool.

Honestly, i'd rather have a companion running around beside me instead of my Chocobo... I mean, i love my chocobo, but they could easily make your companion a new Scion trainee (since the rest are kinda.. well.. y'know...) or something like that.

I know it won't be as fleshed out as say the SWTOR companions would be.. but having an NPC that could add in their 2c every now and again would be fun.
