That's my problem...The story seems interesting at part but at other parts seems fine. Now that I've skipped through over a third of it I'm not sure I'll even understand the rest.

Lv30-40 is easily the dullest part of the storyline. You get sent on a long chain of quests where the NPCs even make it clear to you they're just wasting your time and have little to do with the actual story.
After that, things get much more interesting, especially as you approach 50. If you need an indicator, I'd suggest you start paying more attention to the story once you beat the Titan story fight.
I would have really liked to have the last 4-5 storyline boss fights split up a bit more throughout the whole leveling process.
The main quest storyline largely consists of fetching trinkets from 1-49 and then changes to a rapid-fire succession of awesome battles at 50.
Maybe it was done for DF purposes.. but it seemed like there could have been some interesting story and development content placed between those last fights.
Ya, the quests to get to Titan were long, tedious , and felt very unnecessary but the story tied it together eventually. Power through it though, the Story later on is well worth it.
Yeah, I would say that for a Final Fantasy game the main story is pretty friggin bad. Good thing the game is fun.
Nothing about it is mandatory. You can level a character 1 - 50 in 2 to 3 days of doing Fates . . . no need to do things if you do not like to do them :)
I think the most irritating was right before the Titan fight. "You want to fight a giant rock man? First, show us your culinary skills." A close second being the people in Coerthas. I didn't get much of that, since by about halfway through it I got tired of it just starting skipping through the dialogue without reading anything. I really don't like that place. No wonder nobody's happy up there, everyone's ass is frozen shut.
The main storyline is terrible until about level 43.
