You are partially correct, Ultima Online your characters were usually refered to as 'chars', but other graphical muds like The Realm and Neverwinter Nights people called them toons. In Everquest Online Adventures they used a lot of terms like char, av/avatar, and toon. The majority of the crowd using the term toon played The Realm, Neverwinter and to a lesser extent M59.

I'm gonna flip it the other way and call anything "toon" in life an avatar:

When I get home, I'm gonna watch Loony Avatars with my kids. After some Bugs Bunny and Daffey Duck, I'll probably put them to bed and watch some Adult Swim on Car-Avatar Network. Maybe if I'm lucky, they'll rerun some old animaniacs or tiny-avatars.
