Nobody is asking SE to force anything on anybody. What I'm suggesting is the implementation of a system that removes this silly game of undercutting that everyone finds so annoying. If you have nothing constructive to add, just go away. If you disagree with something I'm saying then do so with a little less rudeness

I think blind auctions would only amount to a bandaid fix though. Other games allow you to see the price of items and such and their economies are generally pretty good. That's not to say that they're "better", but they do work.

I think the main issue in this game is the fact that everyone can be everything. You can max everything, make everything, and sell everything. In XI you could only really max 1 profession, although you could level more on alts. In WoW you had your choice of 2, though your character needed to be leveled as well in order to take them to a useful level. You were somewhat limited, and it helped to keep markets from completely flooded (though XI had this issue, it was from gear never leaving the system).

Unfortunately the gross undercutting we see comes down to an issue of the playerbase, and there's only so much SE can do to fix it. People will always undercut prices into the ground, even knowing that in order to get your item to sell first you need to list it 1 gil lower, not 100,000.

Lol except everyone doesnt find it annoying. If you're a buyer, undercutting is a gift. If you're a seller, undercutting is annoying. The market consists of a constant mix of buyers and sellers, who all want different things. A buyer wants to pay as little as possible, while a seller wants to make as much as possible. If you dont want to get undercut then pick a less crowded market to play in. Undercutting is just the result of competition. If you can't handle competition, there are economic alternatives apart from capitalism.

No, that's not how the market works. Assuming demand remains static, as price continue to be pushed lower by oversupply, more and and more producers will stop production due to the lower profit, thus starting to decrease the supply, until the market reaches a equilibrium.

The real problem here is that the way SE has set things up atm has resulted in an economy with limited demand - there is almost no demand for non-endgame gear due to the game throwing enough free stuff at people to cover all of Eorzea twice. And the endgame gear are either not good enough (militia), or too expensive (ilvl70+materia) for the majority of the player base. Add in a double whammy via the relative uselessness of materias due to there being no slot on dungeon gears, what you end up with is an economy that consumes very little.

It would be amazing if there ISN'T major undercutting with the way the system is setup.

As someone earlier in the thread clearly stated, the problem is that people don't want a profit.

They want a huge profit, and when someone sells something without knowing that it is rare and worth a lot more, it causes the price to go down.

The answer isn't to take away the ability to see prices. The answer is to remember that this game has a free economy. Why is this thread even on general discussion to begin with? There is a crafting board.

Reiterpallasch, your reply is very insightful. I see now how much of a mess this system will be to change. Still, I think something should be done, it just feels sloppy and the undercutting game is mega frustrating

Free markets are supposed to be sloppy. You forget that everything in this game is easy to get. The demand for anything you can produce is pretty small. Add in the fact that most ppl are starving for gil, and you have a stampede of "sellers" trying to make easy money. What exactly do you think is going to happen in this situation?

I don't see the need for change. As I've said, if you want less undercutting then you trade a less crowded market. There are lots of markets with decent demand and not nearly as much supply. Pick one of them.

I find that rather than selling my items cheaper by relisting, it serves me well to sell high friday and early saturday, and simply not bother with sundays. By then the markets gone haywire. The take the surplus I didnt sell, and relist during tuesday and wednesday when the market is back up. That way I sell the items at the price I want, and I dont lose money by spending my materials only to sell in a rushed way - (btw. what is the deal with needing to sell fast and thus be ruled by the undercutters? - They dont dominate the market except for later on the weekends) - The only items I produce on sundays are meals, because craft food sells well on the weekends due to all those rushing out their products LOL.

As has been said, the issue isn't found within the market infrastructure, it's to be found in SE's incredibly dull and bare bones crafting implementation/gear itemization. They tried to use an indepth crafting and gathering system as a selling point for XIV, and then didn't design one facet of the rest of the game around it. It's just a poorly made game honestly

as a lvl 50 crafter i don't undercut at all i match the lowest price on the market it might take a extra few hours to sell because i didnt under cut but at the same time i make a little extra gil for it the problem is people want to sell there item and want to sell in now

i normally slap together 4-5 champions lance's before i goto bed most nights and always price them at 20k regardless of the current lowest price and every single time ive logged on the next day after work i tend to find ive sold at least 1 of them normally all of them
