I have a 500gb SATA drive lying around. Will this increase my ps3 performance or do I need one of these SSD's?

Solid State Drives have no impact on in-game performance. Turn off spells or effects from other players to fix your rendering issues. I have a SSD on my PC, and all it does is effect load times THATS IT gaming wise. All performance related issues are related to the GPU, CPU, or RAM.
A simple google search of Guru3d or tomshardware will prove that. Dont waste your money unless your looking for shorter load times, and even thats questionable on a PS3, the system was not designed for SSD's, the bios would have to support it properly for you to get the full benefits.
I dont understand how ignorance like this exists with google right there in front of you...The guy after me thinks a fast internet will effect load times. I think Im going to cry............
Just FYI, you can attain fast load times, if you adjust the settings on your router/get a better modem/pay for better internet/reduce the number of connections to the internet active in your household/.
All of these options can improve your load times. And yes, they do work.
Also, the load of FATE mobs is not a PS3 issue, its an everyone issue. PC players get it too.
Can you put one of those in a 500gb ps3?
this is correct.
this is not however. it's not questionable. it's a fact that a ssd can improve load times on your ps3. google it.
also:
it works for FFXIV.
btw yoshi p himself stated once that a sdd will help.
Anecdotal Evidence of Benefits of a Solid State Drive being used in inside of a Ps3. Note: Your Mileage May Vary.
Issues I was having in with the 500GB HDD in my Super Slim Limited White PS3:
- After Clicking 'Play' At login screen the game takes between 10-20 seconds to load the Opening Cut Scene.
- When moving from Hawker's Alley to the Stair's next to the Lift in LL. The Lift room would fail to load in time, leaving me 'Running through emptiness' until it loaded. On turning towards the stairs, the stairs would not be loaded until right as I hit the zone line.
- Load Times between zones ranged from 6-10 seconds. The most extreme being an almost 30 second wait when attempting to load into a dungeon with a large opening cutscene.
- When participating in a Large Population Fate, Monsters fail to load, players fail to load, Macro's fail to operate properly because the delay in abilities triggering from load times prevents the next ability to trigger in time.
- Players and NPC's have a long delay in loading on screen.
- When too many players are present the game drops in FPS to between 10-15FPS.
Below I will list the benefits I have acquired from transitioning my Super Slim Limited White Ps3 from a 500GB HDD drive to a 120GB SSD.
- Loading Time of Opening Cut scene after clicking Play in Start Menu: 1.5 Seconds
- Loading Time from transitioning between zones: 1.5 Seconds (From 6-8 Seconds)
- There are no more Pop-in's When sprinting from the middle of Hawker's Alley to the Stair's next to the Lift in LL. Stair's are always loaded.
- The slowdown previously experienced when attempting to participate in a high populated FATE is gone. I can now engage and perform macros without Delays.
- Pop-in's generally are non-existent with the highest quality textures always being loaded no matter how fast you move through a Zone.
- When approaching high population zones like the area around a Retainer Bell, All characters are already loaded before approach. No Pop-In Characters.
- NPC's are always present when moving quickly into a new area of a zone.
- The delay in seeing the AOE effects on the ground and causing a failure to dodge them is gone.
- Generally the game seems to constantly maintain a 30FPS ratio without any slowdown except on absolutely extreme population spikes.
I have not tested participating in Odin Yet, but Svara was easy to move about and target monsters and players without any, ANY slow down.
Which SSD did you end up using?
Black Friday is around the corner. Thank you for the tip! I shall try this method.
An SSD makes a very noticeable difference on PS3 and would highly recommend getting one but obviously they can be expensive so it's really a case of if you are annoyed enough by things loading slower. As for people saying it wont make a difference without trying it, it does. Maybe not completely performance-wise but the less strain on loading models etc means that it can focus on other areas and makes the frame rate more consistent. If you do decide to get one you wont be disappointed with the change.
