Is Dinosaur Fossil really just sector 15?
Looking at the information posted since the 3.2 update, I would guess that they adjusted the algorithm to require more favor to get the higher value drops. At the same time, they introduced a new tier of parts that has higher stats. Forecastle is key for Favour and Aftcastle is key for Retrieval. Using higher values of those components results in reduced speed and range, which makes the trips take longer. By doing all of the above, SE are slowing down how fast people can collect high value drops, which balances out the increase in the value of those drops (addition of tier V and IV spoil).
So, slow, high favour builds seem to be the choice for farming now?
Though they sounded precise, my numbers were an estimate created with the trip planner tool on the airship log spreadsheets. Since I don't have exact coordinates for sector 24, I had to use the rounded distance numbers the game displays. The formula we're using is exact, but internally, the distances between two sectors aren't whole numbers for calculating trip times. So, instead of it being "28" away from the Home sector, SC24 is actually more like 28.1 away. But, as you say, it doesn't really matter - the numbers are close enough, and the relative difference between the 150 speed and 154 speed builds should be the same (about 30 minutes).
Increase your speed. Having a Tatanora and/or Viltgance rigging is really nice for when you want to discover new sectors or get small numbers of specific drops. Also, hit both sectors with all ships that can. It's not super-efficient as far as time goes, but it's more efficient (imo) than hitting other sectors. Do home -> 21 -> 19, of course, because it's shorter than the other way around. Give up on getting other items for now and just have all four ships hit those two sectors. When our FC did it, we unlocked both at once with the second ship and obtained total junk with all four, wasting two days of airship ventures. But, not really wasting, 'cause we got both unlocks.
Been sending our ships out since 3.2 release, still yet to discover new sectors, brought back next to no materia. Just getting branches and freakin cassia logs =.=
RNG surely hates us :p
Ships are decked out with a viltgance piece each, specialising them in either the hull, rigging, forecastle or aftcastle areas. But, still, no luck. Just crappy loot!
They've never changed an algorithm, ever, with one exception (and they explicitly stated it when they did - tank attack power). Why would they start now changing things in secret? The simplest explanation is always the most likely.
Sorry if I sound a little sharp, it just grates on me how often people make up fanciful explanations for what they see, trying to fit an extremely tiny dataset into a generalized pattern. You need at least a few thousand datapoints before trying to fit sample data to a pattern, and that's still a small dataset.
The guide says the 3rd airship is Unlocked through Sector 14, but I already have a 3rd Airship but I don't have Sector 14 unlocked. Not sure what happened. I just noticed it when I unlocked Sector 13 today and came here to check what it would unlock.
I am confused, but it's not a big deal.
I keep getting this weird line in each voyage log, any idea what it means?
Quote:
Additional anomalities detected. However, current airship condition found issufficient for further exploration. Setting course to next destination.
Hello,
Which builds have gaven you the best results in getting grade V materias ?
I'm using the quartet for my 4 airships from first post.
Prior to 3.2 i was getting a lot of tier III, sometimes tier IV.
Now on same areas i get sometimes tier III and a lot of cassia logs :(
Do we somehow have to use the new tier VII parts?
Was just commenting in our FC that we wish we could upgrade the mammet pilot to stop bringing back the stupid stuff :)
Right now I am using Invincible Hull, Bronco Sail, Viltgance Forecastle and Odyssey Aftcastle on two of my ships, this gives 138 survey, 126 gathering, 54 speed, 84 range and 150 favor. So far the lvl four material findings have been pretty good from sectors 13 and 17. I also have a ship designed to go straight to sector 24 with a Bronco Hull, Odyssey Sail, Viltgance Forecastle and Invincible Aftcastle. This gives 150 survey, 68 gathering, 122 speed, 50 range and 154 favor. I can swap the Hull and Aftcastle to either Invincible and Bronco to increase certain stats if I want, so far this ship has always brought back a lvl 5 materia from sector 24 and is 1/3 on iron spoils, it can make the trip in around 29hr which is pretty good.
So is it now confirmed favor is a better stat than retrieval? I see people getting the iron spoils with high favor and very low retrieval. Does this trend continue for materia, or do you need both high retrieval and favor to get big stacks of crafting materia like the previous patch?
See above - there's no proven (or even suggested) causation between high Favor and better drops. However, there may be some correlation there, because no stat affects the rarity, but higher Retrieval usually means lower Speed and lower Surveillance. Those two are the stats that actually matter. High Survey gives you a better chance to get two chances at an item per sector, and high Speed gives you more chances over time. So, a ship that has low Retrieval has higher of the stats that actually matter. Favor is not one of those. Retrieval doesn't matter because you only get 1 Spoil per hit (unless you get Optimal yield (which gives a chance at 2) and get lucky).
I wish people would stop saying that about Favor without any data to back it up =\ The only thing Favor affects, from my research, is exp gains.
Is that research pre 3.2? Because something has definitely changed. Easily past the point of calling it "a few bad luck trips". All my ships with the same setup pre-3.2 have been consistently bringing back substantially less stuff.
I think our Mammet is blind. Our ships can't find the new sectors. I guess this is payback for going 1/1 on discovering Diadem...
Thought I'd add another data point.

The other sector was 18 and yielded two iron giant cores.

Nice! First haul of 3 I've seen. How long did the trip take with the bronco sail?
Running S24 > S13, so about 2 days, 12 hours.
Never seen lower than Grade 3 crafting materia, but i just got grade 2...will post screen shortly

Yeah, it's definitely possible, but super rare. From my research, grade II materia is the rarest drop you can get from airships. Because it's so rare, so uninteresting, and so undesired, I left them off the image in the OP deliberately. There's ample documentation of it elsewhere in this thread and in the airship log sheets.
Hello there my fellow FFXIV players! o/ I've been using a free company workshop for a while and I know some things can get to be kinda confusing. So, I made a video that explains everything about the workshop, including airships. This is the most recent patch info (3.2) and there is also some helpful links and tips in the video and in the description. (One of them leads to this guide) Hopefully this makes you a master of your workshop in a short amount of time. It also gives you an idea of how much material you're going to need for all those airships, aetherial wheels and stands, and fc house glamour. SPOILERS: A LOT :(

Oh and if anyone happens to have some good pictures of the fc house glamour, let me know. I'll happily add a link in the description of my video. Have a great day and enjoy! :D
Just making sure I wasn't crazy ;p
Are there some caps requirements to unlock some sectors ?
We've tried for a while to unlock secteur 16, as well as the new sectors (23, 24), but we never get them, after dozens and dozens of ships sent...
Our ship for the moment has those stats:
Surv 100, Retriev 104, Spd 86, Range 104, Favor 100
Often, when sent to the sectors for unlocking, we get the message:
"Additional anomalies detected. However, current airship condition found insufficient for further exploration."
Is it because of a lack of stats ? But that seems strange we can't unlock sector 16, while we had no trouble unlocking sectors up to 22...
As stated numerous times throughout this thread, "Additional anomalies detected. However, current airship condition found insufficient for further exploration" only means that you did not get the second item to be found from that sector.
Got Iron Voyage Spoil today from sector 23 also got one from 24 at the same time so its possible to get 2 of them from the same run
I've rebuilt two of the airships so far to invincible-bronco-vilt-ody and those have come back frequently with t4/5 materia (limited set though as only 3 voyages have been completed so far, but all 3 yielded results). Still not a single 4 (crafter) from the remainder (pretty much all Invinicble-IIs across the board), though 3s have cropped up from time to time.
Hi there, somewhat new at this airship crafting thing.
First I wanna say this, thanks for this thread. A great wellspring of knowledge here.
Second, I want to mainly collect Crafting Tier 4 materia, so what stats are the most important for that? Surveillance, Retrieval, Favor?
Since I wanna hit both 13 and 17, would the Invincible/Bronco/Viltgance/Odyssey be best?
Ok, I have read that to unlock sector 19 u must visit sector 15... I have made 9 trips now and still no luck! Is there a certain flight path to take or am I just entirely unlucky (using 2 rank 50 airships to try and discover it)
