Not taking into account BiS Items, wouldn't Overmelding Crit be slightly more beneficial than Det? With of course SS and DHit taking priority over everything when it can fit. I'm just curious. Cause I figure you'd basically have nothing but SS and DHit Melds in BiS Gear.

Only if you get enough crit so that the quadratic curve overtakes the linear one.
The thing is, can you do this while stacking as much speed and DH as possible?
(You can't, but that's like 2/3 DET melds in bis, so honestly if you feel better putting crit there, by all means. This is like 0.2% dps we're talking)

Edit your post to circumvent the character limit per post. Not sure why they don't expand it to a more reasonable number (like 5k) if everyone effortlessly goes around it anyway in almost every post. It's just bothersome for the same of being bothersome.

I figured as much, Not honestly to worried about the Spare melds that are not DH or Speed. More concerned with the larger ones. :P

The idea that you need to stack crit into the stratosphere before it can become the highest weight is way off the mark. I don't even know how that was arrived at, but I've heard it fairly often this week.

So I've been looking more deeply into it because of that, and to be frank, some of the facts aren't pretty anyway. I always knew the tiering would make it so you kinda have to sim every possible set to be actually sure about BiS (with the saving grace that you can usually safely ignore the ones that look straight up bad; most "exhaustive search" problems are like that), but in some instances, weights can almost universally give you the wrong recommendation.

If there is an optimistic take on all this, it's that you can choose whatever secondaries you like without too much suboptimality. It's the main stats that don't cut you much slack.

As it stands, I believe I'm either at 500 Det, or very close to it. I've seen so much talk about Det emerging as the chosen tertiary stat for BLM, but when I look at the gear and how little Det there is on it, it almost seems pointless to stack Det because we're either stacking SS or DH via materia. I mean, if there's good evidence that slapping a +40 Det on a piece of gear that's maxed out on SS/DH will make a significant difference over crit, then I'll start doing so, but until then I think I'll continue to stack crit where i can't stack SS/DH.

I agree, I have 2096 SS (with food is 2100+) and about a little over 500 DET. I would like to see some evidence of determination being better this patch before I start melding tons of DET.

This is never going to happen. I went to double check, we're talking at most like 4/5 melds. It's really not very important if you're overall prioritising speed/DH.

Honestly, you can probably get away with an heuristic solution where you grab the two hardest scaling stats for the secondary range (Speed/DH for Black Mages), optimise for those two (rather extensively) ignoring the remaining stats (so Crit and Det) and then just check, for the range you end up on those, if the linear scaling of det overtakes or not crit. At least that's what I do, but I'm lazy.
(As in, using the actual fits for the data, not the linearized weights).

So I'm planning on getting my chest piece today- which would bring me to about 2200ish spell speed if I meld it with SS... Should I meld it with Det maybe instead? Or is 2200 a good number?

Erm... this isn't a simple question.
Plan your whole set together.
As for speed, aim for specific thresholds with several properties- like, allowing you get one more cast under LL or pot or something like that.
Be sure to check the nearest speed tier and if you can hit it, or it's wasted speed. There's a spreadsheet with that flying around by dervy and his number-crunching folk.
There's more to this, but... the way you're asking this is almost a vacuum. If you want to hardcore min/max, grab the curves and work around it.
If not, I don't think it really matters x)

I've scoured the internet trying to find any information on spell speed thresholds. So if you could point me in the right direction that would be great.
