Hey I support both threads for adding male Viera and female Hrothgar (I have loads of posts in here and this thread is also the only thread I got a temp ban from forums for due to a homophobic person decided to use nasty slang to insult.), just I cannot ignore the massive elephant in the room of current female Viera and male Hrothgar and looking at another expansions worth of gear would do let alone 2 or 3.
I think it's quite clear there will be some update to older races, there's already a new male midlander preset used by NPCs in both the first and the source with scar and lip differences. So I wouldn't be surprised if there was just a general upgrade to the character creator for 6.0. Hopefully along that line there will be more hairstyle support for hrothgar and viera, if anything I could see it occur with the 5.2 series, what with the story centering around the hrothgar homeland and ivalice
Not really. In all time of the game existing there were plenty of characters that use customized face. Thancred is one of them by the way - you can't create 100% copy of him (I tried, there are little differences) - and he's somebody you meet in very first hours of the game. Few characters in HW, few in SB, few in ShB. That said, having custom face NPCs doesn't mean there's update for playable models incoming. What I mean is update totally can happen indeed, but until they actually announce it there is barely anything what could be used as a hint for it.
I wouldn't say that. In terms of unique NPCs yes those faces such as Hiens are unique because they are story relevant, but these are faces used by multiple throwaway NPCs out in the field that are obviously using CC presets to edit them, unlike say the child models which are generally the same face with different hairstyles.
Also Yoshida's gone on record that they plan on upgrading the graphical textures of the game but wanted to focus on getting shadow bringers out. Based on this and the fact that some of the base 1.0 models are 7 years old at this point, I think it's been hinted that a CC update is planned for the future. Whether that be 6.0 or 7.0 it's almost an inevitable QoL change that the older races receive some sort touch up along with that.
Of course this is just healthy speculation, whether they actually follow through or not is completely up in the air, but so are most things it would strike me as odd that they would spend time on special facial models for non-important npcs that are not children instead of working on hairstyles for Hrothgar.
Also examples.

Given that they wanted to provide a more beastly race option, and that male Viera are a pretty blank slate in terms of design, I'm kind of surprised they didn't kill two birds with one stone and model the males off the mythical Jackalope.
Weird and beastly with antlers & fangs, but also still recognizably a rabbit.
Ah well, that ship has sailed. Would have been neat though.
Even if that was a possibility, I personally hate the trope of Ugly Beastly Men and Pretty Beautiful Human faced Women in races.
Like, if its a beast race, the beastly features, aka an Animal Muzzle shoukd go both ways. Not just the males, or even the females. So, if the Viera were gonna be a beast race in XIV then both males AND females should have Rabbit face
None of those faces would appeal to me for sure. If I was going to play a male (on an alt), and midlander would be my preference since highlanders are too bulky (literal cavemen), they would have to look more masculine, and probably older for me. Still, I wouldn't say no to more variety, since half the midlanders in the game use the exact same face. Stubble is kind of a necessity as well for making a good looking human male.
Thank God they didn't go full beast with viera, that would be hideous. I agree though, if one was gonna be more beastly then both should be, otherwise it would be weird. Granted, they have the 7 foot tall au ra males, and 5 foot tall females, so that's already getting a bit weird. In that case I think the males are just compensating for something though.
I'm sure such a decision would have got a load of complaints when released too, I very much doubt it would have got 1131 pages of complaints though.
Plus, I don't know about anyone else, but what they ultimately went with for their beast race just doesn't seem all that 'ugly beastly men' to me.
Not that it's a route I'd want to go, but if hypthetically they'd chopped the tail off the Hrothgar and stuck some bunny ears on them instead that'd still be a (slightly) less weirdly dimorphic than the Au ra turned out.
Male Hrothgars aren't bad in general, but if they were presented as male Viera with same design without tail then Auri dimorphism would pale in comparison to such a decision. Auri at least have somewhat similar proportions and both males and females are pretty much clasically handsome/beautiful, and their main issue is huge, almost comical, height difference. While fem Viera and male Horthgar next to each other as hypotethicaly same race... /deep inhale/. Just no comments.
I’ve said it a few times and I’ll say it again. The easiest way to remedy the male viera situation would be to use existing models for the body, no tweaking necessary. Create 4 heads unique to the race. One clan can use the au ra body, minus the tail and scales, and the other clan can use the miqote body, minus the tail. Change the posture a bit, and the running style, and you’re done. That cuts down on almost all of the hassle and expense that goes into creating a new race, namely the armor refits, and satisfies those who want tall and short male viera.
Maybe this truly beautiful concept I created will change your mind. ;)

Hmm, it's possible my vision wasn't fully realized enough.

There literally is an anime where guys are anthropomorphic animals and girls are just humans with ears/tails (except the main character cuz he's a human)

Beastly male characters are generally a lot more popular than beastly female characters. Even then, both are fairly niche when compared to the more humanoid races.
They dont look like they belong to the same race. This would still piss of a lot of people. Those that wanted males to look more like the female Vieras and those of us that wanted a beastly female. Also its a horrible trope anyway. They could have solved the problem by just introducing one race be it either Viera or Hrothgar. And since people wanted Viera for a lot longer and seeing the amount of people that play these races I (as someone who wanted a more beastly race) would have been fine with Viera.
I just wish they would, or could have, handled our "beastly" race better. Not only not "limited" - but the face tied to hair. Like, God even if they have "unique heads" they should be able to switch hairs without a fantasia...

Just came back from my GM ordered vacation but I just wanted to keep the dream alive. This is the body type we need male buns, it is the only fair option if SE goal is diversity. Short and chunky is the best way.
Come on guys, best of both world those who want a short boi get it and those who want a round or pear shape boi get it. All happy faces!
Humor is all good, but be cautios with your jokes. One of them can be pretty much taken as "so that's what they want" by team and then the entire community will suffer because of 3 people "lul it's for fun" messages. ツ
We should also be wary of the tiny minority who want them to be stick thin, short and overly feminine/androgynous. Though vocal, they don't appear to actually be representative of broader and more conventional tastes.
Just like we should be wary of the vocal minority that are asking for 'classically handsome' defining it for their personal preference.
Or you know better yet just showing support for their inclusion and just let the devs have it their way and enough with the backhanded comments
And yes I'm aware this comment is one too but Theo you are especially bad with the snidey comments towards people's preferences and quite frankly it's just urgh at this point.
Thankfully it isn't a 'vocal minority' who favour classically handsome aesthetics. Good looking guys are more popular than the strange looking, sickly characters that a tiny but vocal portion of players are pushing for within this very thread.
Luckily Yoshi-P also made a statement a while back ruling out child-like viera, so I doubt the attempts by some posters within this thread to try and push them towards being as short and androgynous as possible will see any success.
I'm not sure what you're accusing me of with the last bit of your post, though I have a feeling you might be mistaking me for another poster - perhaps even yourself! No worries though - it happens!
Simply trying to turn it on its head this way won't work, because his entire point is that the "classically handsome" aesthetic is more broadly preferred than some of the frankly odd, effete looks that have been pushed for as the overarching look for the males of the race... I imagine if anything they'll throw in that one "soft" face that looks weird on virtually every male race and be done with it.
Theodric has offered a few examples of what he considers to fit within that rubric, at any rate, including this lovely pic...

...I am sure we're aware of how this will fare against it.
