I just want a player-set chat filter. I'd block tells and shouts with special characters and extra spaces. That would minimize the spam enough for me to the point I'd no longer consider it a problem.

How would you even know if someone is a gilbuyer? It's not like they come out and admit it. Yeah, players did indeed create this problem you're right. But again, just telling players to "stop buying gil" or some such thing is not going to cause this problem to stop. This problem is not solvable by the players at this point, which is why we turn to the devs/SE.
Posted a reply up here because I'm at my post limit for the day. I just let the chat log be since a couple weeks ago. I realized having to remove people from my already full blacklist just to add new ones who spammed me every minute was actually more effort than just leaving the chat log alone. It's just not even worth it for me to blist anymore. All my /tells go to a separate tab now and the chime sound has been disabled. Anyone who sends me a /tell for anything will be ignored because I rarely look at my /tells as it just disgusts me every time I look at them.
Let me check with all the members of my FC.
Well I'm not buying gil.
After a through interrogation with all 1 of my active members of the FC, I've kicked all 0 of the people who were buying gil. I don't party or invite strangers who admit to taking part of RMT. I still see a problem with RMT, and yet, I've done everything I personally can to stop it.
I wish they would do something about this. Start threatening people with legal action or something. It's hands down the most annoying aspect of this game. I have a blacklist full of people who spam this crap and i still receive tells for this every couple minutes.
There are regular announcements of account bans under "actions taken against RMT and other illicit activities." I do remember Yoshi-P responding briefly once, possibly in a live letter from the producer (I seem to recall him saying that they needed to "exterminate" the RMT/spammers or something like that.)
Unfortunately I haven't yet seen any forum comments or responses from any of the community team or developers, in spite of the worsening spam problem and the large number of threads. This is very surprising since the community team frequently addresses other topics and concerns, but the 800 pound elephants (spam/RMT/botting) seem to be ignored.
The more I think about this, the more I am inclined to agree that right-click report (including the message, obviously) really couldn't hurt.
Apparently WoW has something similar already, along with some kind of auto-ban system, so it seems not to destroy the game.
p.s. That's square-button report for PS3/PS4 players. ;-)
I'm adding my signature to.
/sign I hope this gets their attention.
