People like Final Fantasy and SE as a whole, maybe their games got them through though times in their childhood or maybe they just really like belts and zippers. Thus they feel the obligation to defend the thing they love the most at any cost, regardless if it actually ends up alienating other far more rational fans of the series that don't like being nickel and dimed.
