DirectX 11 is coming sooner or later. They probably won't officially drop support for PS3 for a long time yet but at some point the PS3 version will start to get left out of major "cosmetic" graphic updates or get only scaled-down versions. People will start to migrate to PS4 once it becomes more affordable, and PS3 users will dwindle naturally. Support can then officially end once the PS3 user count drops below a certain threshold, so backlash is reduced to a minimum.
It won't happen within this year or probably even the next, but sooner or later it will stop making sense to support the game on two very different Playstation platforms.
Of course a $1K built PC will outperform a console. The same PC would cost a ridiculous amount off the shelf for people not experienced with building PC's. Consoles bring superior convenience and accessibility. That's a big deal to most people. Are PC's more capable? Of course. Are they for everyone? No.
Its a choice they aren't going to make people buy a new system if they don't want to.
This is a decision SE would have had to make before deciding to release the game on PS3. It would be bad business to drop support for (or segregate - people bought the PS3 version expecting to be able to play with their friends on PC) the PS3 version less than a year after releasing it. SE will have to support it for more than a few years now, at least.
I do think they should have not released on PS3 since 2.0 launched around the launch of PS4, as that way they wouldn't have to design the game from 2.0's birth around the limitations of a last-gen console, which they've unfortunately already said restricts their design. But whats done is done. I don't think it was very forward thinking to release on PS3 though, but I think their goal was to reach as many people as possible in the short term on low end PCs and consoles, since they needed to make the money lost from 1.0 and designing 2.0 back.
Well if everyone can afford a ps4 maybe but I can't afford one atm, I am saving up for one though i'm sure alot of people don't have ps4 yet so I doubt this will happen.
Right, I didn't mean to come across as smug or condescending (re reading my post I can see I did). I was more replying to the guy that was trying to put a high end PC next to a PS4 and call it inferior.
I like consoles and I've played on PS3 and PC so I don't really get the "PC Master Race" thing, but to say that a console will outperform/have more functionality than a stand alone computer is insane.
To be honest it's really a point of how well the PS4 itself will sell. Sales have been rather strong compared to the PS3 but even going at a hearty clip it will take years to catch up the the instal base the PS3 currently holds.
If the market demands it SE will drop PS3 support but it wont be for years to come. They are going to do whatever is more profitable for them, not what would give them more breathing room to develope with.
Yoshi speaks alittle about this in this Interwiev with Gamer Escape.
Hes saying that they eventually will have to skip ps3 but not until at least after the expansion as they are making a ps3 version for it. He also talks about the DX11
