III. Accept the fact that there are trolls out there.

IV. Make a connection on well known Mentors and have them as a friend or LS. If you can't find one at random ask for assistance.

Overall; Communication is the key. Players pay their monthly fee so are free to play however they like. Just like in life, people have a very weird concept of what common sense is and fail to take responsibility. You can only be an innocent bystander or help in your own way.

As a personal tip;

Find an LS or FC that has a decent reputation. (tank or healer community mainly)

Black list people who leave or are just trolls.

Party with people who you trust and rotate roles to get things done right away.

Be realistic, unlike FFXI this game is designed to allow players to solo play more, yet the world isn't perfect.

If you have experience and your explanations make sense speak up in a friendly way. You will notice that when things go south people can turn the tide by speaking up and taking a chance.

I agree with the other poster, really. I don't know if you hang out in Balmung's NN (I never saw you in there), but I ended up leaving in under a month after joining solely because I wanted to help people largely because some of the other mentors were just so obnoxious and it was rubbing off on me. NN was rife with petty personal drama and a couple of the mentors in particular tended to be somewhat combative and condescending to sprouts, flowers, and other mentors alike over even the most innocuous questions. Mentoring isn't just about game experience and is very much about temperament, but right now there's really nothing in place to even take a stab at ensuring mentors are not just knowledgeable, but patient and respectful.

Sadly, whatever solution we can try, the only thing we can do, at the end, is deal with it. People ditch duties all the day, but if a mentor does it, we have a huge thread as this one.

And therein lies the crux of the matter which ties back in with the issue of what is really expected from a Mentor? Having reread the OP, any discussion about the Mentor roulette at its core is redundant because people will see a crown ditch and that'll be that regardless of what that person queued for. I'd sooner say that crowns should only be active inside duties if the person is running the mentor roulette (have whichever crown you want outside of duties). That way, if they have a crown and bail, we can have a discussion about that roulette specifically. If they queued for anything else, however, they will be judged like any other player - which is what they ultimately are, even when queueing for the Mentor roulette.

The issue with people leaving the duty while mentoring is very easy to fix (at least on people's side) which is: for every 1 minute of dungeon, give 1 point towards the 2000 mentor achievements (astrope mount).
people leave those duties because a guild hest takes 26 seconds to complete, but a dungeon takes 10 to 15 minutes or more! especially when we have to teach people to how to complete an extreme!!!
30 to 90 minutes to teach 7 other people to get 1 completion towards the mount when you can do it in 26 seconds... feels like SE is not valuing the teachers.

The real problem is not mentoring, it is the reward system where you loose 1 hour or 26 seconds to accomplish the same thing.

Would be easily exploitable by queueing into a duty with some friends and AFKing.

Sure you can. Pick a duty almost no one would queue for and queue for it during low-pop hours while adjusting language settings. It's already done for guildhests.

This is my take on it. There are some extreme mechanics even I, as a mentor, have forgotten over the years due to not doing them synced.

Which is why I'm an advocate for removing EX content from the mentor program. Being a mentor doesn't mean you should be required to do high level content. IMHO it's more of generalized information.

Have a high level mentor roulette that gives double (or more) rewards.

I understand some people want a challenge but there's the Party Finder and the Minimum Ilvl button for that.

you can be a mentor outside the roulette too if you don't feel like doing content which might require you to actually mentor or ask square to give you another roulette which does not count towards any achievements.

I wonder how many mentors have/can complete not all but most even most of the current EX content in the first place. :3

This has always amused me. Last night someone left Void Ark, the Sastasha of raids on load in. And there's like a 50/50 chance of it in pretty much all ARR content (80 if its Aurum).

I've never understood it. To eat a penalty for a duty that will likely not even last the duration of said penalty is such a waste. I can understand leaving in frustration if people are playing really badly and not really attempting to get any better but to opt out in the begining is just...ug.

They should make it so that if you penalty out before like 10\15 minutes or so, you lose the chance for the roulette bonus. Problem solved.
