It really comes down to to gear and level. Outside of coil out gearing content, yes obviously you should be doing damage. Why not? In coil or under geared for content, no, please don't unless it is for some sub 4% push to kill.

Did you pay attention to the Story quest at all? It literally tells you to DPS and Heal to be a complete player. Do healers HAVE to DPS, prob not. Can they. Heck ya. It sure beats standing there doing nothing when you out gear content by a mile and need to farm tombs.
But either way SE actually did tell you to DPS and Heal.... just saying.
The issue I have when using the DF to get a tank is they will not use defensive cooldowns, or make it so the mobs are hitting from the front. This means two things:
1. I have to spend less time DPSing, more time healing.
2. I generate way more threat with those constant heals that throwing a Holy or Stone II is going to pull threat. (Shroud has too long of a cooldown to be using every pull)
When I run with my friends, they tend to use defensive cooldowns. This allows me to throw a regen on them and then go into cleric stance and go to town on DPS. Most times in AK I don't have to even cure our warriors or paladins, the regen is enough at the beginning of the fight alongside the stuns from Holy. But that is because those tanks know how to tank. Most DF tanks are making many small mistakes that lead to the two issues above.

I can't believe this thread is still getting responses. The answer is simple - when you can you should DPS. If you don't have time to DPS, then either you are a poor healer or your team has gear that is under the threshold that will allow you to DPS.
There is only one instance in the entire game that regardless of gear you will always be occupied with heal - Coil.
Both healing jobs have good DPS rotations, particularly considering how Cleric's Stance works (yes your DoTs are more powerful than a BLM or SMN).
Honestly, I frequently rip hate from most tanks in DF as SCH (as in, every pull with more than 1 enemy I'll end up tanking those after the first usually). As long as I'm not "tanking" all 3, or 2 + a dullahan, I don't even care. If the tank is bad on the trash enemies, you can just take over. If the tank goes primadonna, Eos can tank at least every other other pull partially with Whispering Dawn.
Obviously WHM has a harder time doing this exact thing, but can Repose some enemies if the tank is lacking.
I agree. I wasn't comfortable with stance dancing until I knew the dungeons. Once I knew I was going to have downtime/knew how to keep the tank properly buffed I found myself standing around. Stance Dancing has opened up a whole new aspect the my WHM and I love it! I was actually nervous about it at first, thinking I would be chastised for not healing, but I've gotten more compliments on being a WHM since I add more to the party instead of just standing there!
On the same note, I understand there are people who are not ready and will try it too soon. Hopefully they will heed their parties kind words instead of raging. Hopefully.
This made me think of a situation last year when I was playing Tera. I was a tank and was PUGing some low level dungeon. The healer was fine and the dungeon was easy so he DPSd a lot and didnt need to heal much, and nobody was dying. Then this one DPS started nagging the healer about him not healing enough. Both me and the healer were like o.O , but we are doing fine! But this DPS just wouldnt let go, and then he threatened the healer that he would report him for not healing! :D
