MEGATHREAD: Requested Hairstyles & Facial Hair

We desperately need more facial hair options. Any new hair options would go a long way, and would be some easy new content that would make everyone happy.

So, call me crazy, but I think I'd actually like it if we got Hermes' hair. "Isn't it just the ShB one?" I hear you ask. It's... mostly that, yeah, but mirrored and slightly shorter/tidier in front, which I think makes a noticeable difference when you put them side by side. I doubt they'd waste a hair slot on it though, ultimately

I think they'd do it- because quite a few hairstyles are so close to one another

Rewards for the Art/Mosaic contest have been sent out (are still being sent out I think)
I wonder if the hairstyle contest rewards are on the same schedule or will be by the 30th?

Having looked through the winners I like 17 in total but really hope they implement like 5-6 of them this immediately

Honestly, I wished there were more short masculine styles, but am still grateful that at least a couple were selected, and this time there seems to be a lot more hairstyles that are actually unisex, rather than "blatantly feminine but guys can use it too," along with more wavey and curly hair overall. It's really the variety we needed.

Can't say I'm too thrilled with any of the winners. A lot of them seem very similar to each other or existing hairstyles. I was hoping for a long wild mane to make it. Oh well, no biggie. Congrats to everyone who won!

All 3 are really nice! though I wonder, given all the winner entries, if not using the Hyur template had anything to do with not being selected. It would've nice to have a template of all races.

I am not really that impressed with what they have shown tbh. I was hoping there would be at least one longish ponytail or long side braid with no daft bang. I also wanted a nice long hairstyle. They do look very similar to what we have already. But I am sure somebody will love them so I will hold out for Hilda hair.

I agree about the templates should include other races - I had drawn on the hyur template but included the extra ones with the lala, viera and miqo for more information bc the hyur template was too small imo
I did make the mistake of submitting multiple times bc I had forgotten to include all of the examples and forgot to put the correct lodestone link one time lmao

The instructions were oddly vague and looking back and the past designs from years ago, half of the winners didn't even show the hyur template
It makes you wonder how many really awesome submissions there were that had a good chance at winning but weren't properly submitted

I love a lot of these and I'm happy with the huge variety of silhouettes. Overall the selection feels stronger than that of the last contest winners and I'm excited to see which ones they eventually implement into the game. It is true that I would not use many of these on my character, but that's completely fine and I know that even the ones that aren't my cup of tea will be someone else's. Lots of bangs as well to hide those awkward XIV foreheads as well as high buns/updos which we've been sorely lacking for many years.

This is probably my favourite so props to the designer. Love the waves and the barrettes. I would definitely use this on my character.

We got a good many that have some potential if they get them in game soon though. I’m so picky about hairstyles, so it takes a lot for me to switch from my usual ponytail, but I’ll definitely be trying some of these out! Just wish I could pick an up and a down hairstyle without having to use the aesthetician every time… hair on glam plates would be ideal!

That's the thing with so many selected styles - your favorite style can be implemented for DT's release... or in 5 years from now, lol.

At least I don't think any of them are bad or anything. I'm excited for most of them, and hopefully they'll keep on what they're doing ever since ShB and have all of them be available for both genders.

Just hoping use of a male mannequin in the picture does not automatically mean male only. I really like that wrapped bun with the bangs and braids! :D

Male/female mannequin have never meant gender locked in the hairstyle design contest submissions. The last winners also showcased a range of mannequins and none of those hairstyles was gender locked. They add only 1-2 per patch cycle these days and they haven't implemented a gender locked hairstyle that wasn't on the shop and from an NPC since, what, Heavensward? Therefore there's no precedence to suggest any of these will be gender locked.

They can't be genderlocked or else the female character bias would be even more obvious

Most male ones that won remind me of your standard manga and manwha protags.
And I bet that not any of them will look even decent on Hrothgar due to their head.

But more options are always nice to have.

Is it just me or do some of the winners look dangerously close to hairs already within the game but with a small alteration?

Honestly, no, I don't think they mostly look like hairstyles we already have. There are a whole bunch of cute Edwardian style buns, milkmaid updos and sock buns which we currently have none of in XIV. There are also a bunch with wavy to outright curly textures which we have very few of to none at all. Perhaps I'm just being too discerning but I think most of these look fairly original with the caveat of them clearly being hairstyles that could realistically be implemented into the game. Nothing is outrageously long or complicated. Yeah, there are some exceptions that certainly look similar to styles we already have, but they are mostly the short styles and I'm not one to criticize the masc designs for being too samey because there are only so many ways to design short hairstyles.

Not to stir the pot but does it not feel a little... odd, that over 30 of the entries are JP? I doubt NA and EU had that few entries for such a disproportionate outcome.

That looks like painted on top of a screenshot. The work is really well made, it looks convincing if you don't zoom in.

What, you thought their disregard for the non-JP community was limited only to the forums? :P

Maybe there were more JP entries that used the template as opposed to redrawing the whole thing? I know there was some confusion as to whether the template should be used or was just a reference but perhaps that wasn't as unclear in JP?

I suspect this has a lot to do with the fact that many of the submissions I'm seeing from NA remade the entire template when they were not supposed to do that. Perhaps it was not clear in the NA guidelines because every single winner used the original template without altering it significantly or at all.

It's almost like they picked short to medium length hairstyles on purpose because they know full well the type of styles they can realistically implement into the game. This is such a "take a hint" moment from SE, imo. And I understand being disappointed, but they seem well aware of their limitations when it comes to this subject because we end up with with the same result every single time. For whatever reason they cannot or will not implement styles longer than Great Lengths for player characters, be it because of clipping or because of hair weights.

then they should do something to fix the clipping issues if its the main problem that prevents longer hairstyles from being added at all, its starting to get stale as they keep adding short hairstyles

Pretty much. It's also surprising how many winners they chose that look like near duplicates of other winners. Almost all the male winners look like slight variations on the same KPOP haircut and many female winners are very close in design to other winners or existing hairstyles.

You've got straight shoulder length hair and the same hair but shorter.

I appreciate the work of the artists and I'm happy for those who see hairstyles they love but personally I was thoroughly unimpressed with their selection of winners. I would have liked SE to choose more hairstyles that are decidedly different from options we currently have and each other. I hope people get the ones they want from this list but hopefully this isn't the only place SE is pulling hairstyles from for the next few years or that will be a very boring time for hair, in my opinion.

Could be less about the individual designs as much as the devs were narrowing down the kinds of hairstyles people wanted? Though I'm not sure why they'd then pick those as the winners, rather than keep that data to themselves...
