But wasn’t their example for beast races the viera?
Printable View
I doubt it. The viera are mostly humanoid and I think the developers wanted to go outside of the human like faces. I could be wrong, however. But then again this shouldn't be a battle of us vs. them when it comes to viera and hrothgar. Both are great, in my opinion and have their own pro's and con's.
Nah, see this was weird. When they put in the option for a more beast race they used the example that was Viera. But then Yoshida went ahead and said that perhaps they shouldn't have used the example that was Viera as it skewered the results. Was odd really. I'm assuming we're talking about the race poll that was done years back.
It could be why the male art was seen as too cute for him as well, I think Yoshida wanted them to be more 'beast like'. We were then given Hrothgar males - and thus the Viera males are now described as being elegant like. So looks like the plans were changed regarding the concept.
Everything can be construed as "fulfilling the quota", so that's not a good argument to use to shut down any suggestion made here. It's like watching the kettle and the pot fight about who is more black.
I always pictured them the same height as the women. Perhaps they may have a greater range of height as Gwen suggested- Shorter than the women, but also taller- as a way to appease all sides.
I try to think of a reason why they would be shorter and I go back to them being of the same height eventually. Perhaps because it takes less calories to power a smaller body, so shorter males may have that advantage and survive longer, which meant more seasons reproducing. And this in turn makes their genes propagate more, so after several generations, we would see a tendency for males to be shorter if the advantages to be taller do not outweigh the advantages to be shorter. But then how to keep this gene from also affecting the women? There needs to also be a factor affecting the height of the women to keep women taller, but women's lifestyle do not favor either height. So there is nothing from the female side to counteract the forces affecting the male side of things. This means the women would also be inheriting these genes and gradually become shorter as well. So we are back to the same place: males and females being of the similar height. But since the women remain tall, then I think it is safe to assume the men did as well and that either A.a shorter height did not improve their chances of survival in a significant enough matter to produce a change to that effect or B. being tall kept giving more advantages than being short did.
I remember reading about a poll where they counted Viera as a beast tribe somewhere in the thread that was done years ago. This might be because Viera originally had more clawed hands and feet, but that was done away with if we look at the Viera we have now. The only way to get those claws/long nails back is at the Gold Saucer with an item.
Edit: If a gene were to only affect males it would have to be carried on the X chromosome given by the female. Female's additional X chromosome (the Barr body) negates negative traits the other one may have. That is why it can be dangerous to only have one X chromosome in a female. A male is ok with 1 X and one 1 Y, however the X will code for genes that the Y will not override (Y is very small and does not have that much info). That is how traits like baldness and hemophilia affect males more than a female.
An example could be that Au Ra women have a trait on X that codes for massive height growth, but their Barr body (the other X negates it). This causes male Au Ra to be very tall then, because they only have one X that is being expressed uninhibited. The same or reverse could be true for Viera men then.
When you’re explicitly stating they should be short because of a ‘shortage’ of short men it does lend itself to being branded a quota-based argument. Anyway I’m in agreement on the bigger range for the height scale, which is why I keep bringing it up. They can use a female roegadyn style gap for them.
Last I checked there were 4 face options with 2 hairstyles each. And all are used on my server, along with the Features, so there is alot of Diversity on the Hrothgar.
Don't forget too, I know they are getting alot of flack for it not being here NOW, but they said they are making more Hairstyles for the Hrothgar.
And I think YoshiP misspoke when he said "Wolf Face" the Hrothgar are a Feline Race, so its gonna be Cat faces. At the very least giving him a little leeway, maybe there might be a new face that could get patched in with more Canine Features. Doubt it, because...again...this is a Feline Race.
A search on instagram turned up this by @viciousjay.art. I'm sure it'll please those wanting the more rough look.

It’s very good art but it’s actually too similar to Roegadyn facially for my tastes. I guess what I’m hoping for is closer to an Au Ra/Elezen hybrid than that. Based on the poll I did a while ago this also seems to be what a lot of people who want a more muscular build are after.
There was another post in the tag that was directly based off of male roegadyn but it was not appropriate to post here. An au ra /elezen hybrid would be good. Au Ra's racial hairstyles would work for the males and I wouldn't mind seeing them reused, minus the horns innate to some of them of course. They probably would limit any new hairs for them to a handful of racial hairstyles again if they follow the new limited pattern they've established now though. Or even worse, link hairstyles to their faces like they did with Hrothgar to further restrict them and force people to buy fantasias to change hair again.
Apparently there was a "male Viera zine" someone is advertising on twitter where even more artists came together to compile their art into a pdf book. However since I don't really trust the online store I will not be buying it for myself and I'm not even sure if it was even legal for them to do so since Viera are something that belong to Square Enix? Anyways while I feel uncomfortable buying it there is still a lot of varied fan art both on insta/twitter/tumblr and I'll try to look for more over time as well as the previews that some of the zine artists posted.
This is one such preview, by @tksnim_art. Again please be cautious before spending money on a product not endorsed by SE that appeared out of the blue.

I'd like for them to look like that.
Yeah, it's a metaphor - this dude been biting the bullet the moment the big bad chad came and picked him up, flexed his muscles and then got down on one knee in front of this young Viera jack.
"It's time to get Jacked, my boy" And then probably proceeded to drag his ass out into the wilderness where for the next multiple decades he's been yeeted to death itself in order to get swoll.
He's biting that bullet with pride. He's the chad now.
Some art of an alpha viera going to the village to find his mate.

I wouldn't mind if male viera were shorter than female viera, but I don't think that's very likely. I wouldn't be opposed to it either way, but I'm just saying. Personally, it would be interesting to me if they were just slightly shorter than the females, but I won't really be disappointed if they're taller.
As for the stuff about fur, it's not really aesthetically pleasing to me. I would tolerate a tuft of fur on the chest, but I hope that would be optional. I'm not a big fan of having fur on the arms and stuff. Honestly, instead of having fur options take up customization space, I rather have a variety of tribal body tattoos to choose from.
I dont think Chest hair can even be a toggle option when its mostly just face option

While I'd never play one, I would love to see male viera and female hrothgar in game. As a matter the hrothgar from the GNB mentions his wife and son in addition to his Queen , so hrothgar at least have traditional family units in addition to their Queens, making female hrothgar not being included even more odd
And male viera, while rare lorewise, doesn't mean none exist or would want to leave their homelands, like male m'iqote
Something is amiss...
Weird.
Don't you guys... feel it too?
It says the story that if you post three times in a row without editing and repeat thrice his name he will appear.
"Lord Zeylos! Lord Zeylos! Lord Zeylos!!!"
Where are yoooou?! You have been missed on the thread!!!
oh!
And le fur... I guess the Rava one could be the more testosterone one and the Veena the soft one, like a GI joe and Ken tribes.
Guessing Zeylos got temp banned or something no wonder this thread hasn't added 5 pages every day XD
Hmm been liking a lot of artwork that has been posted, of the most recent one i prefer the top version but i would like the facial hair of the second as a option, these are wild jacks somehow i doubt they would have a barber until they leave the forest :P
Lets just enjoy the peace while a few are away

This thread has been on a downward spiral since the big players wen't MIA. We need a resurrection, for it to rise like a phoenix from the ashes. It may never be the same while the embodiment of the community's passion for male viera is away. It may never reach the devs if this isn't always on page 1 daily, with thought provoking arguments, for and against the inclusion of male viera. I don't know what we will do.
Thought provoking arguments? We reading the same thread?
speak of the devil and he shall appear
so what do you all prefer? highlander or elezen shaped bunny men
Why not a good mix of both
This thread is the voice of the community. Without it, we definitly would never get male viera, and would have never been heard in the first place. This is the last holdout; the last bastion. The foundations are already crumbling, with the loss of the major voices for change in this thread. As it is now, it's just a glorified "share your" thread". We need to change that, we need to be THAT VOICE. Without us there is no hope, no hope at all for the inclusion of male viera into the game. We will continue to have no hats, and floating circlets, and that will be the extent of it. If only the community showed as much passion as the voices of the past, for the completion of the viera race, we may have circlets and hairpins that didn't float, and maybe, JUST MAYBE, we would get a world with male viera!
BE A VOICE FOR CHANGE! BECOME THE WORD!
Well, given that they see stubble as 'too difficult' to implement I don't have high hopes for the male viera situation.
My stance hasn't really changed. If they're added, great - if not, that's disappointing but it was never promised to begin with.
Be patient. Stubble is something that is out of the bounds of current hardware. We will need a massive overhaul of the game engine to have stubble included. That is just how it is. Stubble is one of those things that we might not even have in 2 more console generations. What we have is them doing their best, and their best is what will give us more of this:
I for one want more of that in the game, stubble would be an obstacle that would completely halt the updates planned for viera. In fact, stubble even in an archaic state would be the equivalent of 2 new full races besides viera/hrothgar, in my opinion.
For example, it looks like they are already experimenting with a sort of biological armor, something like a second skin apart from the body, but OF the body. Just check this out. Honestly, I think they are doing amazing work.
