I think this is what some people think the thread is about sometimes? That we're against old characters at all? I know it's not what MagitekLuna themself might think, but I think it's what others have gotten out of this thread. But like 'w' no, it's fine for old characters to be used when required. But... for example, Thancred. Thancred's story is so clearly over. What more does he have to offer as a character? Y'shtola has a reason to stick with us, but she doesn't have much else past that goal. And she shouldn't have any, she's stated plainly in Endwalker that she wants to keep exploring the world and uncover its mysteries. I personally view that as "I'm gonna go on my own adventure and figure out stuff that would rival that of the Ancients, with or without the WoL's help".

They're fine to pitch in, of course, but no need for them to constantly be around.

If we keep reusing these characters, then...
a) We need to give them a purpose. At which point it feels like they'll flipflop. It's like those long-runtime tv series that went on for too many seasons. And the characters who already had arcs resolving their major plots suddenly had to develop some unforeseen bullsh*t to justify their inclusion and the show's tenure
b) We don't need to give them a purpose, just have them walk around and help. Like having fun with our amigos. But this isn't real life, narrative characters are not as complicated. Especially not when their narrative arcs have ended. They grow stale.

I cant speak beyond the Void Post EW storyline, but Yshtola has plenty of reason to still be around.
But I can agree that at the very least, Thancred probly could look towards retirement. Im not bored or tiered of him or want him gone, but he does seem like he deserves a Rest. Hes gone through ALOT of Growth and his Arc has concluded, so as someone who has loved him (started in Ul'Dal) for a while, I would like to see a happy ending for him. Only reason he'd still be in the fight at this point is to be our Intelligence and recon....which....he is a frickin Master at. So I think he would still have a use if they kept him around.

Honestly, I think its good on Paper, and can be executed very well in practice.
Pretty much as you said, and its why Im excited at the idea of her taking on a bigger role. Its the same as Uringer; where he was a meer background character, but then they put him on the forefront, and he turned out awesome. I want the same for Kryile.
Especally compared to Uringer, she hasnt had a chance to actually DO anything. And she very clearly has more to offer then getting Body Snatched and being left behind.

Blizzard did that and failed miserably
Player base cant establish bond with new characters
Why Blizzard brings back Illidan is a best example

Blizzard also committed the mistake of allowing the same characters to tag along with the player everywhere, namely Jaina and the like and that too has exhausted people's patience. The fault lies in the writing quality of these characters and their arcs, but when it comes to ones that have been around as long as the Scions there does come a point where people have had enough.

Y'shtola's numerous fakeouts have made it so that people cannot take her seriously. G'raha Tia's behavior is offputting to no small amount of people. Krile isn't considered particularly exciting either. I will not even mention the twins and Thancred - they speak for themselves. If they are unwilling to allow the cast to undergo meaningful growth and change on a per-expansion basis, as in, not relying on things that happened in ARR and still expecting us to care, then we'd be better served by new party members or better yet, a new cast of characters unique to each expansion like how FFXI was.

But like Blizzard, we have a great example when it executed correctly with Emet-Selch. Emet-Selch might have surpassed Sephiroth in Final Fantasy popularity a feat that I never thought would be possible. Its on the whims of the community who gets accepted and who doesn't.

The characters also need to be written well and liked.
Emit was an Amazing and sympathetic Villain...thats not something you can easily do, and not often.
