I would assume he's one of the alphas of the pack. They're usually large and in charge...and he was both.

If I'm understand the story right so far the Lupin are very different from being a beast tribe. They served the lords the Doma just as any other citizen. Especially that it makes mention that in the last 25 years since the empire took over that many of them have taken to being bandits. They act nothing like the others that we have encountered.
