5 hour emergency maintenance with 10 minutes notice...

The problem is probably the same one that has been causing 3 hr maintenances every 3-4 days since open Beta. The servers are totally inadequate for the stresses placed on them. SE did not plan on this game being as successful as it has been. The system needs to be totally redesigned and implemented even if that requires adjustments to the client to accommodate it.

I'm pretty sure OP is exaggerating. While I have seen ENTIRE FCs fall apart due to people being unhappy with the game, it is usually more about the content of the game than the maintenances. A lot of my friends and their tiny FC quit shortly after 2.1 because they didn't like what was added.

Having all my gil stolen because I was AFK while clicked on my retainer. That just sounds really shitty, and was actually a real problem. Would you rather they have given you a date/time for maintenance while some little gil seller was ripping you off? This game started off as complete shit, absolute garbage. It takes a lot to go from the bottom to the top. Not everyone is Drake. They've done an amazing job so far and have put together a game that has a lot in store for it's future. I bet if they released new content every month you'd bitch and complain that there's too much to do and you don't have time to do it and all the low level content is worthless and blah blah.Sheesh! The real issue is the lack of long term character progression, no content, and a crap economy. The game is bad, its lucky a lot of people like final fantasy. If this game were any other title, nobody would be here still.

I'm sure they started this maintenance on such a short notice for a good reason.
However, there was a maintenance earlier and obviously they broke something instead of fixing it.
It's not the first time and it's getting annoying is all.
I Remember FFXI being the same way. After each update, there was an emergency maintenance to correct what they didn't bother to test beforehand.
