I wonder if this was a suggestion by the french community team.
Reason I'm wondering is because in France, April fools is called April Fish, and kids celebrate by making fish drawings and sticking them on people's backs (similar to english "kick me" signs, but they're fish, and then you get to pretend whoever got fished is stinky). So if it was them that came up with using a fish like game character as an avatar for the forums on this day, it would make sooooooo much sense.
