I completely agree with you. I understand players put a lot of weight into non-vanity content, but not everyone in the community feels this way. I know plenty of endgame people that use glamour; vanity has to have some sort of merit. I know I specifically avoid F2P games in order to not have to deal with a wealthy few dictating what the company will work on in order to provide cash shop exclusive content. Time and time again these companies have proven once they're offered an inch they'll take a mile. Even WoW promised it would only be a vanity cash shop, they offer now offer xp boosts and basic guild services we enjoy today like simply changing their guild name.
Whether a cash shop is acceptable or not is a debate that the MMO community has had for years now. However, questioning these business practices is a healthy exchange between a business and it's consumer.
