Roleplaying, per se, is fine. I absolutly have no problema with roleplayers at all. Actually, most of them, I've noticed, are kind lovely people who love the world they are playing in. Not to mention they usually have the best glamours in this game :P . Unless those RP'ers are forcing others to join it, or ruining other people's enjoyment of the game, I don't see the problema of it. There are RP servers and it is a MMORPG.
ERP, on the hand... I don't understand it. And the ERP'ers are usually the ones who force others to be part of their circle jerk in such a rude way. Maybe the ERP'ers I've found were a vocal minority, but I don't understand it still ahah.

My general experience (as an RPer mind) is that very, very few RPers make an effort to aggravate other players. If anything, it's usually the other way around, with a non RPer deciding to troll the daylights out of the RPers (which is very rare, but does happen).
I'm not saying that all RPers are sunshine and rainbows, because just like any playerbase, it has its share of unpleasant people. But most of us want to just be left alone to do our thing. I don't really see how using the chatbox could bother people, unless you make the unwise decision to RP smack in the middle of say, all the people clustered around the Limsa market boards.
As for ERP, you only really see trolls and immature people doing that in the open. Everyone else has the grace to keep that stuff private.

I love RP. although I'll never do it myself, I find it highly entertaining to catch random rpers going on in random places in the world. Ive even had a few funny RP people in dungeons.
What bugs me and most people that are bugged, I believe, is having to deal with erp.
I believe that's what puts such a sour taste in peoples mouth about RP in general.
If you wanna erp that's fine, have fun. But please, do it in your guild house, or your apartment heck, set a dungeon to undersized unsynced and erp with your friends in there.

no real comment as I have rarely ran into ppl who RP (I knew 1 person but they changed servers a bit ago) the idea seams noval, like walking past a street preformer in RL, if u like it u stop & watch/join if not u move on. ERP is an acrynom I did know about till I kinda "had to" (figure out what it ment, not actually do it), personal opinion now... its can be like reading an adult book or playing a 2D game, definetly can get u'r mental gears going, thus giving u "material" for later, but would sujest it not be in open-world as u never know WHO may randomly wander apon it & maybe get offended (like letting u'r kids use u'r PC but forgeting to active the parental settings... try explaining that away later)

The way i see it, to each their own thing , if someone wants to role play, let them. It's not hurting no one, but just don't expect others to join in or push them into role playing with you because, that's when i notice people usually getting angry at each other about it but if you give people a chance to role play sometimes its funny or actually pretty fun to see. :)

If RP'ers have a poor reputation on FFXIV I would have to say it is due to the stigma associated with Balmung, which has been the Unofficial RP Server since before Balmung existed (the original was Besaid, which merged with another server to make Balmung). Balmung players tend to get a bit of flak in the community due to the extreme housing crisis and people's interest in glamour. So, when Fanfests and Q&A's come up, a lot of questions based around these aspects of the game are repeatedly asked, and players with other interests get very distraught that their own questions and interests are seemingly ignored due to the mass amount of Balmung Players/RP'ers asking the same old questions time and time again.
As for ERP, as long as its kept private, no one cares, but no one tolerates sexual predators either. The issue is that Balmung's Quicksands became the FFXIV equivalent of World of Warcraft's Moon Guard Goldshire. They even both have innuendo nicknames. Pornshire and the Quickiesands. I would say that, like Goldshire, you're not looking at actual RP'ers so much as trolls and people looking to Cyber. Few people bother to make the distinction between ERP and Cybering these days, but the distinction still exists. RP'ers engaging in ERP are letting a series of events, romantic or not, unfold to their natural conclusion per their character's reactions and personalities. Those who engage in Cybering are literally just looking for sexual gratification over the internet using their Avatar (player character) as a stand in for themselves, and others. That's not to say there aren't RP'ers who don't seek/obtain sexual gratification through ERP, but in general, you can separate the two (ERP and Cybering) in a fairly simple way.
ERP - Imagine any Game of Thrones sex scene. Its there to develop the plot or a character.
Cybering - Amounts to, "I tuch ur penzor."

We used to RP ever since we were young. Playing with dolls, toys and giving them personalities.
Some people carry that with them, but now you have your in-game character to play with instead. I don't think badly of it at all.
FFXIV is rated T for Teen. There are some underaged players. ERP should not be done in public.
