I don't usually like to get into discussions about Final Fantasy's past on these forums, because I had enough of them during the Beta. However...

Leon's best weapon in Final Fantasy II was actually...Masamune. The original FFII didn't have the character exclusive weapons, and Masamune was the strongest weapon in the game, with an attack power of 150. It wasn't until the PSP edition that Longinus, Ragnarok, etc. were put into the game. Additionally, swords axes and, I believe, spears could be wielded with two hands in Final Fantasy II. Equipping a shield actually halved the attack power with those weapons in exchange for the bonus to evasion.
