Your mentality is why MMOs are cesspools now - "Why do you care that people are exploiting systems?" ...Ok.

It's simpler than that honestly. I bought GTAV today and I ended up playing that for 5 hours while I was logged in, totally forgot about FFXIV, but I was still logged in, no auto log out. And all I had going was the map open because I'd been trying to keep an eye on FATE spawns.
First off, the target for this sort of change would be to alleviate stress at peak times, not "early EST". Most people are employed, or go to school.
Secondly, this isn't "the system being lenient". The more likely scenario is auto-logout isn't something SE initially planned for so in their quick fix to implement it, they missed the many holes able to circumvent it. In other words, it's an unintended oversight.
I can't believe you actually think opening a menu to circumvent the logout is "being lenient" lol. This community is adorable.
As long as they are not disrupting anyone elses game play then it does not matter to me but once they do then they need to be kicked.for example congesting servers or crowding npcs
Personally I don't see the point of being afk as the benefits from resting in an inn room far out weigh just having my character just standing around idle for an extended period of time
http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/t...vements-Part-3
Explains some improvements that having the afk timer implemented.
My guess most of these afk people are just stupid people that like to do stupid things. You have a few options, report them or just ignore it and go on about your day.
Why is AFKing still necessary?
Because of 2+ hr queues for the AK instance. Other than that, idk.
From: The People Against the Wussification of Eorzea
It seems to me we have a growing group of people who are ACTIVELY and OVERLY concerned what other people are doing that has NO affect on them.
Please sit dafuq down.
Thank You.
I honestly had no idea about this until this thread...
Ok normally I'd agree but in Uldah and Mor Dhona there are so many elite statues standing around with their weapons drawn all day, as well as other characters that are less obvious about it. It makes Uldah and Mor Dhona really laggy. So it does effect those of us without the best computer hardware. We count too.
*Whooosh*
Because bot-mining and being AFK in a town clearly have the same impact on other people. People AFK'ing has absolutely no impact on anybody at all except the people doing it. Bot-mining affects EVERYONE. Not the same thing. AT ALL.
"Look Jimmy, that guy is AFK, it's ruining my MMO experience!"
why are people so desperate to never be logged out to begin with?
It takes all of 30 seconds to get back in game and if you don't input anything at all for 30 minutes your clearly doing nothing but wasting a little bandwidth and cluttering servers.
Is it just people have grown to be so lazy that typing in a user password is too much to ask for?
Auto log out was necessary only for the first week because of game breaking bugs, if anything it should now be removed. Even XI doesn't make you logout.
Hahaha GOOD! I hope the people keep doing this and many other ways till SE finally removes the feature!
Even if they "fixed" this, there are a lot of other ways to make you stay logged in that I don't see them easily changing. I hear the Japan servers are still having a lot of stability issues; hopefully auto-logout will be removed when their servers are more stabilized.
The auto logout feature is not just to keep Q's down. The tool is not suddenly no longer needed. the entire purpose is to keep resources and server stability. Its not a major game changing feature, but its one of those small things that really help keep the servers clean. The fact people are doing this is the Definintion of exploit Exploit - to take advantage of (a person, situation, etc.), esp unethically or unjustly for one's own ends.
All big MMO's have this feature, so its here to stay learn to deal with it. At this point all you can do is report these people so maybe they can get it through there thick skull that you don't AFK. Its not about just server Q's the use is multi faceted and that is exactly why the other MMO companiies use this feature. Outside "It is no longer needed" immediately followed by a server Q reference. you have NO reason at all for it to be removed. hell you don't even have a good reason with the server Q's being down. after a maintenance or expansion you could easily experience the same issue as launch day if you did not have this feature in place. There is not a reason to not have this feature. whine all you want, I see someone AFK, gonna report them.
Never mind the fact that the size of the game doesn't really matter in this topic, Eve Online, one of the larger subscription based MMO left, does not have a logout timer - in fact, afking is actually a valid resource-denial tactic in wars.
Knock yourself out, ironically you will be the one doing actual harm to the game, by cluttering up a support system already stretched thin dealing with actual issues.Quote:

For the last 2 nights of gathering I've been setting auto synth before I go to bed. I'd say I felt bad since apparently I'm greatly effecting the people that happen too walk by ... but I'd be lying. Sorry, I enjoy this 'feature'.
It's not intentional.... It's because of quicksynth.
Quicksynthesis is designed to que up large numbers of some mundane item you need to make other things and go afk. I mean I for one am not going to sit by my PC and watch my tune mindless make 99 bronze ingots. I quicksynth them up and once it starts I go afk, watch some t.v., etc and come back later.
These people are going afk for the quicksynth to finish and coming back hours later. It's not really there fault their not being kicked. We are not exploiting it, we are crafting, it finishes, and then are tunes sit there afk not getting kicked.
eI really don't get the point of staying logged afk in for extended period of time.
It's a waste of server resource, a waste of energy consumption for both square enix and yourself, and extended strain on your video card or console.
Does it effect me? No but it does effect the earth and it's environment..
LIke I said... not trying to stay logged in, just going afk during quicksynth and somethign coming up and not returning immediately. Take last night for example, I was going to bed but wanted to quicksynth, so I fired one up and turned off my monitors and went to sleep, expecting to be logged out in the morning, but no.
If SE doesn't want us going afk, then they need to not add something to the game that encourages going AFK, which is what quick synthesis does.
Because they paid for the game and they do what they want!!!!!!!!!1111111111111
Plus they need to know if their FC is talking about them while they sleep.
No one sleeps tonight. The paranoia has set in. I for one absolutely wake up
sweating bullets and run to my PC to see what they are talking about.
I also rage at the 20~ seconds it takes to log back in, eff that noise, bro!
NUMPAD 0 is too hard for me. I absolutely HATE having to log in, but hey,
I'll use the "You guys can log in easier now so just do it" argument and
contradict myself all day. Cuz I sure as hell am all about logging in fast
but I will never participate.
Fix it and kick them out, KICK THEM ALL OUT! MWUAHAHAHAHA!
I've got something of a tangential question to this, which is that my computer, when running this game, makes my room hotter than the Sun. How can people stand to have that much heat generated when they're not even playing?
Some people actually decided to use an actual computer, and not a radiator to play the game on. Just because you have a crappy cooling system, doesn't mean others have.
BTW, What is with the need of all you afk-timer supporters to know what/why/how others use their game?
I thought what I'd do was, I'd pretend I was one of those deaf-mutes.
I hate auto-logout but I get why they had to do it. With the free game time running out and the new car smell wearing off I doubt servers will be as congested as they were at launch. I love afking in games. Sometimes I want to take a nap and listen to the battle and zone music in the background (I'm lame). Other times I want to see whats going on in my ls while making dinner. Who cares, we don't need the afk police reporting legitimate players in the crafting motion. Instead lets report the bots that move in circles all day long where mobs that drop diremite web and fleece spawn.
The need to have the auto-logout work more broadly is had just by logging in. 9 times out of 10 I'm placed in a queue, double digits during peak times and single in off-peak. This isn't during the weekend, this is 9 times out of every 10 logins. I literally clap and squeal when that 10th time comes around. But, the queue is always waiting for me to come back. Sure, those other people are paying real money to play but, hey, so am I. I'm no more nor less important than they are. And yet I'm having to wait all because those people clearly don't see it that way, that their monthly fee is somehow better than mine and entitled to more benefits. Square's fix for the auto-logout couldn't come too soon.
What's the big deal with letting these people go afk if the queue isn't so bad? Why complain if there's no problem? It's very likely that many people will get bored and move on to other games soon. Why do we have to bust everyone's balls for something as simple as afking?
I think the main problem is that the people who like to AFK use the whole "The que isn't bad so just log in" argument,
yet they refuse to do it themselves. Doesn't that seem a bit of a contradiction? Why preach something when you
yourself are completely against doing it?
If you are seriously hell-bent and have to be logged in as to not jump off a bridge IRL, then I guess stay logged in.
If you are paranoid enough to where you HAVE to see what your FC is saying at all hours of the night/day. Ok.
If you think 30 sec - 1 minute of your life to log back in is absolutely heart shattering and unacceptable. Go for it.''
I don't get it. There are no bazaars, you get rested exp logged off. I would really love to see a reason besides the
"I just want to" that I've seen 250x now. Just give me ONE. And I'm not talking about waiting for DF etc, I'm talking
about the absolute NEED to say logged on for 16 hours while you sleep/work and don't touch the game. I want to see
a reason for THAT.
-Seeing FC Chat: Void. You are not going to be able to scroll back up 16 hours worth. Unless your FC says 1 sentence every 15 minutes.
-Wanting to beef up your playtime to ridiculous levels: Idk. That's just odd to me, not sure of the benefit.
-Cuz I paid and I wanna stay logged on: Ok. Still doesn't necessarily explain anything, as you are not PLAYING with the money you paid. You are sitting there.
