I didn't feel like reading through 4 pages of potential QQ but for gamepad users, there is a homebrew driver that allows use of the xbox360 chatpad. This allows your controller to be both gamepad, mouse, and keyboard.

Wired Xbox 360 controller only....
Did you donate to help pay for the development over at mp3car....no...I didn't think you did. I did, and I have offered equipment and money to help with the wireless drivers so I have done what I can to help.
I'm not complaining...I'm caveating it. Most people own wireless controllers, and until the dev has time during his schedule to make more progress, most Xbox 360 owners are out of luck.
i extensively use ps3 controller and just started playing (another mmo) today and was let down that i couldnt set up a controller. The controller flows really nice with ffxi and ffxiv.

I'm just going to leave this right here.
In all honestly I didn't read this thread. But I had heard in various places around the forum about the keyboard issues. And this was me coping with my keyboard issues. And I like it a lot. If they fix anything I don't like. Hey~ Cool~ But for now I'm comfortable.
----Things I'd like fixed-----
1. Shift + '0' (Ins) On the Num-Pad = Reverse Targetting
2. Being able to custom bind the arrow keys.
I find it funny how you say people are lazy if they prefer to play with a controller and they do not perform as well. For one I am a console gamer and to me a controller 100% more natural to me and I am more effective with a controller than with a keyboard. Generally I do use both depending on the situation but I mostly use controller and in no way am I gimped to my counterparts who use a keyboard mainly. I have all the functions at the same speed that I possibly need on the controller and if for some reason I don't have the button I need to get to whatever I reach down and press the button on my keyboard.
Thanks to fully customizable controller layouts that have all possible buttons needed to play the game at maximum effectiveness for someone who is used to using a controller over a keyboard and being able to make macros to do any action with the press of a single button makes your whole argument useless. I never get a single complaint about not doing something quick enough or people ever asking me if I use a controller because it seems like my skills are being diminished. Because you don't use a controller well doesn't mean others who are used to using them aren't just as effective as you with a keyboard and mouse. I will admit to there being certain limitations and the fact you may be able to go through your menus quicker and what not but to be I am never in my menus in battle and I am at my optimal speed using a controller. (On a side note I am used to playing on both Keyboard & mouse and/or using a controller, When I played WoW I couldn't use a controller but when I played FFXI I used nothing but controller/keyboard combo)
As for controller type I have a PS2 to USB converter and I use a PS2 controller. Controller of my choice over Xbox pad because the DPad is a million times better and doesn't break or wear down nearly as easy.

When I have fever and wanna play from bed, gamepad wins ! Otherwise I usually play on keyboard. On Keyboard+mouse I have more freedom. But issue with gamepad is not bad at all - its just a matter of learning and its more comfortable.
I've used controller for ffxi and ffxiv. I like the fluid movement of it and the fact that I don't have to haunch over a keyboard and develop carpal tunnel. 100+ buttons doesn't always mean better, it makes it more complicated for people. Have you ever find yourself asking your linkshell, "Hey whats the button for autorun?" If you ask me, its L1 shoulder button. For those that say, "Oh, it's so horrible they cater to controller players!" This is one of the few MMORPG's that actually have a controller option. Everything else out there is keyboard only. Without the controller option, I will not play an MMO at all, so that crosses out 98% of everything out there.
I will admit, controllers are the bomb for crafting cause you only need a few buttons and its relaxing. But in the heat of battle, nothing is better than a keyboard.
I guess I should also explain how I control this game. I use a Logitech G13 keyboard in combination with a G15 keyboard. Between the two I have over 150 G keys that I can program anyway I like, plus the G13 has a joystick that I have mapped to the left stick of my controller so I have fluid motions too. The problem is I want to map my arrow keys to my G13, which I did but for some reason, mid battle instead of changing ability bars I am changing targets. Its very frustrating. If they would just split up the actions into seperate keys the problem would be solved.
I also realize that they are changing the whole battle system soon, so there is no point in wasting time on the current UI. I just hope that the new battle system/UI is more customizable. We all have our own ways of playing this game, we should be able to make any button on our keyboard / controller do anything we want them to do.
I want to see the fixed keys section in the config menu disappear. There should just be a giant list of actions and we put in any key we want to do any action we want. And don't force any two actions on the same key. Especially one of the most important actions, like the ability bar scroll keys >.<
My keyboard is a Logitech G13 which has a joystick for fluid motions. ^^ Of coarse I use a G15 as well.
And no, I have never asked anyone what the autorun button is, because I am not an idiot... >.>
There is a real good reason why 98% of MMOs use the keyboard over a controller...
Think about it.
You're still thinking aren't you... >.>
Still thinking?
Controller really limits a player, but if you choose to limit yourself, so be it. I do hope SE down the line adds proper keyboard/mouse controls, but I'm not holding my breath... I have a top of the line controller as well as top of the line keyboard and mouse and of the two interfaces I prefer keyboard and mouse purely because I feel more restricted using the controller. I can't quickly change between action bars and spells with a controller because you have to scroll around. In addition, if you have a group of mobs you can't target the specific one you need to right away, you need to cycle through all of the targets in your field of view until you land on the one you need. A controller really restricts you as a player.
yes 100+ buttons and playing this game with a keyboard is a freaking nightmare.
Joystick > keyboard because of the poor poor POOR setup of the buttons and camera controls.
i wish i could program a cure macro into my mouse.
You gotta love having the game focused around a version of the game that isn't even out yet. Also have to love the fact that they still haven't changed it.
I wish they'd drop the PS3 release, having the game tied to a console will only hinder it in many ways.
I find not needing 5 hands to completely use the keyboard and its poor layout in the game a plus for the gamepad.
Gamepad that works > keyboard with horrible shortcuts and layout.
There's a reason why nearly all mmo's are made for pc only, the controls.
That also means that 90% of mmo gamer's are pc players. How will this game attract people from other mmo's who are used to keyboard/mouse?
This is my greatest fear for the future success of this game, many will not even bother just because of the UI. This has been expresed greatly in every review made about the game, "It was not made for pc" can be read everywhere, well there goes 90% of your potential subsciptions. I hope i'm wrong.
SE pls create a PC UI for this game ;)
That is the whole point of my thread here is to get SE to allow us to customize our own controls and make a PC specific UI. This thread was never intended to persuade anyone to use a keyboard over a gamepad. If you like gamepads then use them but for those of us using keyboards, because that is what we are used to doing, we are screwed. The title I gave this thread "Gamepads over keyboards fail," is in reference to SEs focus on the UI. The game already works fine for gamepad users so we don't need any of you complaining like once SE changes the UI that controllers won't work anymore. This thread is for keyboard users, if you like to use a gamepad and have no problems with it, then move on, this thread is not for you. However I do believe that once they do fix the UI for keyboard users you will see its benefits.
That sounds like a fair resume of the situation.
I do think that selling a PS3 version will send a positive signal and would cause people to recast their reviews which people will then read. The objective here is to meet the points raised in those reviews. And to like, read them?
