Why are people opposing to this? It's more customization options, and you're complaining? Really guys? I really don't think body hair would look unnatural since, you know, there's already beards in game.

/bump yeah with all the other wonderful threads going on >.> bumping this.
I'm all for more customization options especially for body hair. To be honest I wanted to originally create a Roegadyn, but with the lack of body hair options it just never looked right so I opted to create a female highlander. If this were implemented I would use my fantasia and create a Roegadyn, which SE has been complaining there aren't enough of. That's just me though.
I supported this thread on the beta forums and I will support it now! ♥
I think your idea is great. More character customization is always welcome. I do hope it's just a texture change or something, so that it doesn't take up much memory.
Unless you've got to have your chest hairs flowing in the wind. Then...no.
Also, don't post just to bump your thread. It's against the rules!

I support this idea ^_^
They do, even without hair. 70's are over, were it was "cool" to look like a wandering temple of pubic lice. x_X
Well.. on a serious Note. I dont see why SE could not implement this feature, for people who really want it. They created some great pieces of facial hair, so body hair should be possible. So +1 to this Thread.
I came here in order to give the OP a like then saw that I've already done that :p
Much more important things to focus on.
Thing is, there always is something more important to focus on. Stuff that might fall under the "less important" bracket could be the housing as well as PvP since people could always argue server stability needs priority, instance random lag and disconnect, RMT etc.
Almost every suggestion on the forums is not a pressing issue. Thank god they have separate teams for separate things in SE. It's not like they can allocate the people working in the graphic department (or however you may call it) to just iron out other stuff they're not even qualified for or know how to do even >.>
A big "hell yes" from me. This game needs more masculinity.
Depends on if SE does it right...
Worst case scenario

Please, no.. just, no!
BEST case scenario!
LOOK AT THAT SUBLIGAR!!!

Too much "for males" in OP.
I'd be for a more furry look to miqotes and roegadyns, both sexes... I actually originally thought they look way too shiny/hairless for races that are supposed to be more animal-like than the others. I always felt like mithras and galkans looked more fuzzy than the other races in FFXI and was disappointed when their counterparts looked too humanized in this one.
I would loooove to see body hair in game!
That's actually not true. There's a 'set' of development teams, which can easily be broken down;
Game Design
Art Design
Sound Engineering/Design
Programming/Implementation
Marketing/PR
(etc.) (All of the following teams have sub-subsequent teams, but this is the rough layout)
If you think that all these teams are working on the SAME thing, you're sorely mistaken.
Those who focus mostly on the development of character designs (Hair/New Race) would see this on their priority list.
To confuse this team with the likes of "Well SOKEN hasn't finished the new dungeon theme, therefore we can't possibly make body-hair!" sounds ridiculous, right?
They had a lot on their plate currently for character development, but that doesn't mean this could be added as a low priority to work it's way up the list.
^ Exactly this.
All of my suggestions bar one have actually been implemented and they were all VERY minor concerns/additions/changes.
Nothing is too unimportant for them to consider it.
Suddenly I now have a visison of people going from; "Oh lol he's wearing a subligar and a harness" to; "Oh my god, is this a gay porno?" with this addition.
My sides, when I seen that image scrolling down Page 7.
Well, I guess at least Roes will need some way to be Eorzea's true King Kong defenders.
If they add body hair, I will fantasia into a rogadyn with a bountiful chest afro.
Voting up this thread! I am so tired of baby butt skin on all males. -_-
D: i want body hair
Hairrr, grosss!!! buuht yay options D:
Actually they do, the normal map resolution is sadly just very low on 2.0's character models, therefore the detail is lost.
What is a Normal Map?
A Normal Map is usually used to fake high-res geometry detail when it's mapped onto a low-res mesh. The pixels of the normal map each store a normal, a vector that describes the surface slope of the original high-res mesh at that point. The red, green, and blue channels of the normal map are used to control the direction of each pixel's normal.
When a normal map is applied to a low-poly mesh, the texture pixels control the direction each of the pixels on the low-poly mesh will be facing in 3D space, creating the illusion of more surface detail or better curvature. However, the silhouette of the model doesn't change.

An example of a higher resolution normal map from 1.23 shows that that the detail is there (it just gets lost with the lower resolution normal maps);
The character models for FFXIV are actually very very low poly models, with fantastic work done on applying the normal/specularity maps for each model.

Yes please. But I doubt they'll expand too much on appearance options until they drop PS3 support. It doesn't seem like it would be any more difficult than adding a new piece of chest gear, but without any actual modeling, just a texture.
As a guy who likes other guys with body hair, I approve this thread. Cheers.

as soon as body hair will be implemented, ppl will start to complain that their body hair isnt moving and it looks like its just a tatoo and then BOOM....it will require more RAM, so more ppl will complain coz their pcs suck all of a sudden -___-
so at the end most of the ppl who want it now, will end up complaining coz they cant even enjoy it... geez dat spiral of doom :o DOOOM i say DOOOOM!!! and u know it....even tho id like my miqote to be more fluffy .____.
I would love to see male character with body hair. It's always seemed odd that some (read:roegadyn and highlander) didn't have any when, well, they are supposed to be symbols of virility (especially the highlanders). I can see why they don't (body hair in Japan is actually frowned upon and isn't quite as common as in Western countries) but the game world doesn't feel like a place where people shave or wax themselves.
What?... when does body hair blow in the wind? I would actually be really creeped out by breeze-blown body hair...
Physical simulations are a process, the stress would be added to the GPU or GPU, memory wouldn't be an issue here at all.
People wouldn't complain about the physicality, just like no-one complains that Elezen or Lalafell ears don't wiggle when you walk.
I hope you're being sarcastic here.
Technically the texture would be applied to a 'model' essentially a 'ghost' model that sits atop the model.
(Calling it a Ghost Layer for convenience and simplicity)
Currently all facial features and hair are carefully placed 'ghost' model layers.
Even the 'skin-head' options for midlander/highlander males is a 'ghost' 3D model layer.
As you can see in this image the hair and facial hair are simply floating 3D models;
http://puu.sh/9tNXi/86734d6d70.png
That would be something, but with a Japanese Development Team that's very unlikely. (Unless this thread stirs them to do it I guess)
I support body hair for males but only if midlanders get stuck with an extremely embarrassing little patch of it to punish them for being midlanders, and match the awful looking peach fuzz pencil staches they have now.
pretty sure there's a weird law in japan that dosnt allow forms of entertainment to show body hair
Might as well ask SE to give you a wolf race as in Lone Wolf
