I just got my Scholar up to 35 tonight. I've been through Brayflox quite a few times already. Even without the AoE heal, I'm able to keep everyone up just fine. When everyone is taking damage you can start splitting the healing, make the fairy heal one person, you heal another, then make her heal someone else...Works great. The only wipes I've had there were from tanks who don't seem to understand their role. There are mobs everywhere and they don't even attempt to get out of the AoE's. Even then I can usually keep everyone alive. Its when they just eat Aiatar's breath attack I start to panic. But I didn't really go through there wishing I had Leeches or anything.
I think I can heal better on SCH than WHM honestly, and its more fun. I feel busier micromanaging the fairy, using Aetherflow and such. Its been a lot of fun!
I really like Scholar healing so far. I feel fully capable to do anything that is needed of me and every time something went wrong i could clearly state that it was my mistake and not the shortcomings of my job. I like the challenge and the potential the job currently offers, though i have to admit that some things still bother me:
The pet ... stance switching (from steady to guard, after every special move) is really getting on my nerves, dying to unavoidable encounter mechanics.
Leeches ... curing in this game has been a pita. It has a casttime, is rather expensive and removes whatever the hell it pleases, but never the debuff you need to be rid of.
But other than that, i'm very pleased with the scholar. Just one hint to aspiring scholars: get swiftcast at thm 26 asap, it saved my groups butt more than i can count.
Hmm, I am extremely surprised to see such post.
SCH is awesome healer even below 30... Hate control is so much better when you can do 1st cures with pixie.
You don't really need Esuna/Leeches until later on anyway.
Many WHMs I have seen just stand around waiting for tank to get hit. SCH casts DoTs on all mobs and while I am getting my Miasma off, my pixie is making sure the tank doesn't get too low while I am middle of the cast.
This is what I was worried about as SCH and hearing how bad they were..but I took up the job and am into my 40's. So far I haven't had a major problem healing with exception of being new to an area and finding out the hard way not to do things. I was really worried when I was going to do the lv.32 dungeon without esuna. But I really did just fine making sure AoE regen was on and...just healing and winning. Maybe it gets worse at 50
44 SCH here. Healed trough every single dungeon, guildhest, fate and trial; never had a single problem with my class, it's really more fun than WHM.
Keybind Embrace to an easy to hit key (F for me) and SPAM IT. As soon as the fight starts, start precasting on the tank. The Faerie likes to wait to cast Embrace, don't let her. She should never not be on cooldown.
Aldo essentially gives a free stoneskin on every cast. Mixing in a Physick and proper Aetherflow management means that you'll never have any issues.
Want to get real fancy? Make shift 1-4 a "Embrace Party member number 1-4" macro. If a mob AOE's, the the DPS need to get healed but not immediately. Your tanks HP will probably be lowest, so she will Embrace him while you also Aldo, and you'll most likely end up overhealing. Force the faerie to do the busy work of topping everyone off while you keep hitting the tank with your heals.
SCH is very strong, but if you try to play it like a WHM (Cast regen+Cure II, Medica II if there's an AOE, fall asleep) you'll have trouble.
AOE debuff apply to pet as well, and there is no way you can keep it alive.
I have been watching video on Youtube, a video was post on 02 Sep and there was no issue at all by that time.
So if this is a bug or minor change, it happened recently.
Totally agree on this. I'd like to be able to save Whispering Dawn for you know...when I ACTUALLY need it lol. As soon as you make her cast Embrace she goes right back to doing whatever she wants.
Also giving commands while casting, that would be great :P Other than that, I've been really happy with SCH so far!
It's always applied to the pet as far as I know... it's still super easy.
Get swiftcast or get your party to stagger when they purge debuff, so half the party eats each application instead of the entire party eating every other application, barely need fairy's heals if you do that. Fairy is basically immune to the final boss' gimmick, which is harder to deal with imo, thanks to how they interact with AoE damage.
There are points whilst levelling that it is harder to heal as a SCH than as a WHM but honestly I kinda feel that WHM is too easy. I really thought I'd be a career WHM as I loved it in XI but decided to check out SCH healing first. I'm not max level yet though so keep that in mind but so far, WHM healing is a snoozefest compared to SCH healing but I can see it will get more challenging later.
On SCH I have managed all dungeons etc so far but the level 35 ability really does help and I'm sure leeches will do even more.
I think if you want to be a career healer, having both SCH and WHM available will make you super flexible for 8 man content.
One thing I really find useful about SCH is that you can take a bit more damage and your pet takes care of you.
I think to get the most out of SCH you have to work a little harder but that's what makes it more enjoyable.
This is great info. I was a bit worried When I became a Scholar (Earlier today actually) since all I had was Physick, but thank god for that Selena the fairy and her great healing. The only thing I'm really dreading is probably getting Swiftcast, since from what I hear Swiftcast is this amazingly essential thing for Scholar (Which annoys me as I haven't even touched THM at all and I shudder to think on having to grind it all the way up to 26)
I healed fine from the moment I got SCH. Roll with Eos for boss battles and it isn't anything to worry about. Even the poison from Broyfax was easy enough to spam cure though.
I will never understand why you would want scholar to be just like white mage, which is basically what you are asking for. White Mage will always be the main healers in Final Fantasy games - with the most powerful stuff. This is the first time anyone even gives us a run for our money (and scholar does do that - they are very good healers). But there are nice things that scholar has that white mage does't ... namely shields which is basically reactive healing.
Have you tried putting her(your pet) on "Obey"? She will only cast her spammable ability and you can choose when she uses her special abilities. You will have to recast Obey when you zone or log in/out but seems to work for me on the carbuncles as I level with a melee dps partner and can't stand when the emerald uses his/her/it's knockback skill. I haven't gotten high enough on my rerolled character to try it on the fairies or egis but I would hope/think "Obey" would work in the same manner for the job pets.
