Freeze/Crash & BSOD issues

This game runs very hot. If you're freezing/crashing it's probably high graphic load > heat > Intel speedstep kicks in and throttles CPU > crash.

Solution - disable speedstep in your BIOS, lower your graphics settings or get better cooling for your video card.

I'm also having random crashes.
I'm not getting a BSOD but my system just freezes, unable to do anything (can't close, ctrlaltdelete, alt tab etc) only thing I can do is restart computer using button on the box. I had 0 issues with Phase 3 and 4. Problem started with Early access like so many others have said.

Computer:
Windows 7 64 bit
6GB RAM
intel i7 920 2.67 overclocked to 3.5
GTX 285 with 320.49

Machine runs perfectly with everything else. Not yet run any sort of stress tests or anything. Last time I did was when I Over clocked CPU and it was fine. System isn't getting too hot while playing this game (gets hotter playing of games and still runs fine)
Playing in windowed mode with graphics mid-high at 1600x900 resolution.

system crashes randomly when playing this game though happens most often when game is the focus rather than something like my browser. I have 2 monitors (if that matters at all). I can't see any reason ingame why it'd crash, I've been fine in fates with loads of people, been fine with all weather types. Played Sunday and Monday all day with no issues at all.

Willing to try anything to make this work but I think SE must've messed up with the release patch. Phase 4 was flawless for me.

I'm having similar problems and I've tried many of the solutions suggested but nothing seems to work. What happened to me was that I was getting BlackSOD from time to time but now I can't get past a particular cutscene because each time my computer crashes. It seems like my computer handled other more graphically intensive moments during the game but can not get past this one cutscene.

I have never had this problem before and I've played recent games on high settings. I can understand it's maybe a hardware problem but it's FFXIV that is the cause of that problem. I would just love to know which aspect of the game is causing this situation for so many people.

Sidenote... I have an open ticket with no response yet. Someone already said they had one open for 5 days so I'm not holding my breath.

Ill get the black screen for a few seconds i can still hear my sound running off my headset so im assuming its a driver crash then it will either come back on its own or i have to alt tab or ctrl alt delete to force to go to desktop then tab back in to the game to get back its annoying just started this morning.

I'd gladly take that problem... no offense. I know it's annoying regardless but I, and many others, have to manually reboot our computer. It sucks.

Oh and I'm another AMD user... HD Radeon 6870. Have the latest drivers but going to try the Beta ones recently released.

using gfx660..rolled my driver back to 314.22. i dont get bsod anymore..but my driver just fails and i end up in the desktop...better than bsod, but still annoying

Just started getting BSOD past couple days. Didnt happen in beta 4 or EA. Started happening after that 6mb patch we had a few days ago.

IM sure it has to be FFXIV. Because Arma 3, BF3, Rift, Dead Space 3, Total War SHogun 2, Ect ect. I can run for hours with no problems. Sometimes I can play for hours with no problems or ill get a crash/BSOD under an hour in..

I am in the same boat as you and others in the thread. I have tried all sorts of fixes, I even upgraded to a new graphics card! Still the error persists! These memory dump BSODs are awful as they freeze my entire PC and auto restart it. I do not want physical harm to befall my PC - I am a supporter of SE but with this and the 1017 error, my patience is wearing very thin.

At least in my case, it's not a heat issue. My GPU was in the low 60s when my game locked up today. You can download a tiny widget that displays the temperature in your taskbar while you play.

Just out of curiosity, does anybody here have a Bigfoot "Killer" network adapter or wireless card? The card has caused stuttering/hanging for me in the past, and it may just be jacked up on steroids for the FFXIV release.

I have to agree with you at this point. This morning I'm able to play with no issues for an hour and a half... plenty of graphically intensive moments. Now I've gotten the black screen (with the need for manual reboot) twice in the past half hour. I've tried many of the things that have been suggested and nothing has worked. I'm hoping this is addressed at some point soon by the FFXIV team.

Also, are they actually looking through these posts? Do they have any sort of forum moderators? I have yet to see any comments from FFXIV/SE representatives on any of the threads I've seen.

Just to nail a point home... I ran their benchmarking software at demanding settings (highest resolution and most options set to highest value) and I got "Very High" performance.

I don't understand what is going on with this problem... it has to be software related no? :confused:

Not sure if its been mentioned yet, but a guy named witai on reddit suggested playing in windowed mode, on the lower laptop graphical setting.

This worked for me, but its a bit of a downgrade visually. I hope a real fix is in the works.

I would love to hear an answer from SE on this, I have just had another BSOD WHEA-UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR while playing FFXIV - No other game I have gets any errors, and this error started at the start of Early access, all other beta phases were fine!

Ok i'm not alone in this case, i have a BSOD after 4 or 5 hour of game :s

I'm using the nvidia 314.22. I know it's not the last version but the new driver are not sure.

Still having issue. Yesterday I installed Windows on a new drive and currently using that. Spent the whole of yesterday playing without an issue, today however the crashing begins. Twice in a couple of hours. Square Enix are you paying attention to these forums are we wasting our time?

I've had a crash issue (once) when going from Bordered Window mode to Full Screen mode in-game, the program crashed and kicked me out.

I've also had a BSOD (twice) from playing in Full Screen mode.

I've had no problems whatsoever (other than FPS drop) while playing in Bordered Window mode.

These things tell me that there's a problem with the full screen mode, but player results here who still get it in Window mode leave me clueless :(

Damn! Thought I solved the problem but nope. I would love to do an instance/PvE but I'm afraid I'll just crash in the middle of it. This is so freakin' confounding... don't know why it's happening.

I would love some acknowledgement from the dev team on this issue. Please let us know you're aware of our issues Square.

I thought I was fixed too, didn't have a crash for 2 days, but had one a couple hours ago -_-

Did another complete driver uninstall and installed the 320.49 again. Then I got 90k'd and am stuck in the endless 1017 now...

A client issue is actually near impossible. A BSOD only happens due to driver or hardware issues since those are the only ones which can take the whole system down.

In a nutshell, what happens is this:
1) Program issues a valid(!) command to a driver
2) Driver does something it's not supposed to do (either due to a bug or faulty hardware), like writing to the reserved memory of another driver
3) Windows detects that the driver malfunctions and shuts the whole system down before this loose cannon does any more harm (and before you think: "What harm?", please remember that it could easily write to the memory addresses the file system drivers use - which could result in overwritten system files and an unbootable system. Just one example.)

Now, why are you seeing this BSOD only in FFXIV? Easy: A software bug does not have to be an easy "If I do this then that!" but a more complicated: "If the hardware clock just jumped to a full minute and the user did a right click, then playing this particular animation will result in a crash."
In full: Only FFXIV may fulfill all the criteria for triggering the bug. But that's not FFXIV's fault. That's the driver's fault. Just like with a car where the brake lines are rotten - braking is a perfectly valid and legal maneuver. Just not in this particular car.

And since everybody's PC is slightly different, this bug may not exist on other people's PCs at all.

beta drivers if so ive always learned using beta drivers is bad due to them being unstable try rolling back you video/graphix driver

for me causing problems was the logitech gaming software latest build 8.5. With 8.46 it's fine but still can't max settings :/ and I have to use it or without it's worse, dunno why + disabling microsoft security essentials helps too :/ i can play on shitty settings for hours without problems :< on max like itshould be after a while fps drops a lot

Having the same problem here. I've had more than 10 crashes in the past few days and had to shut down holding the button. Hopefully a fix will be available soon.
The laptop setting which downgrades the visuals seem to work though.

Got 2 BSODs last night after playing most of the week without an issue, not sure what may have changed as I haven't done anything to my system (no updates to drivers, don't think I've even had any updates for Windows itself). It lists 'memory management' as the cause, but I only get it when I'm running FF14. Been playing other games today just to see if anything else triggers it, but it has been clear sailing. Ran some memory tests as well, nothing popped up.

Sounds like you're having the same issue as me. Usually my PC "shuts off" after about 30-60 minutes of play. It only happens during FFXIV. I let Sim City 5 run all night and I woke up to see it still going strong. No other activity causes this behavior. Sitting around in the FFXIV menu also doesn't cause the issue. It only happens during active gameplay.

Is there a separate thread about our issue, or any other info?

I think I found a fix for full freeze issue, I rolled back my nvidia driver to 314.22 and it works, but instead of freezing, the driver will just hang for 5 seconds which is still doable.

Given this probability, doesn't that mean that we all have to wait for NVIDIA to figure out the problem, and issue a new driver?

I hate to see that others are having this problem, but glad that it's not just my computer. I had this issue since phase 2 of the beta and reported it twice, but received no response from SE (and only one other person claimed to have the same issue). Once I turned down my graphics settings and returned the card and CPU to stock settings, it was pretty stable since phase 4. Then it started again this weekend. It's extra frustrating when it takes so long to log back in to the game. I've kept the AMD Catalyst control panel open to monitor the temp, and it tops out around 68 Celsius. The CPU tops at around 60. No errors in memtest or crashes from more intensive programs. A few of the first times it happened, I noticed a fan jump to full speed, so it must be due to some driver/hardware miscommunication.

I have done everything but a full Windows reinstall, and I'm starting to think it might be worth a try. There seems to be so many variables, who knows what may fix it.

AMD 7850, Driver 12.104

BSOD 124 here. I have ran 6+ hours of Prime95, 20 Passes of LinX, 3 hours of Heaven Benchmark, Extended Windows memory Diagnostic, disk checks. All came back fine. Thinking it was the latest Nvidia Beta I reinstalled 320.18 WHQL and still get BSOD 124. Excuse the signature, easier to use the one I use from the EVGA forums than type everything.

from all the threads i've read; it doesn't seems its a driver issue, overheating, settings, etc.

people from this thread and others have tried everything and to no avail, BSOD.
i'm just going to wait it out and see if a real, solid solution comes out.
already spent $900+ for a brand new computer just to play this game. I'm not really willing to spend any more money to buy new parts to test if a specific hardware was the issue (incompatible).

"Exception code: 0xc0000005" If I remember correctly, this error code has something to do with system based permissions. I would make sure that your system is running ffxivboot, ffxivlauncher, ffxivsysinfo, ffxivupdater, and ffxiv.exe as administrator. Also make sure that each of these applications has usage permissions for the SYSTEM and Users accounts on your PC. If the problem continues possibly try running the applications in compatibility mode for "windows 7"

I have the same problem: game freezes randomly, I get a black screen and can't do anything. Have to reboot the pc. Sometimes even my gpu ramps the fan up to max rpm. This only happens with this game and its very random. 2 days ago it didn't happen at all, yesterday it happened once and today it keeps happening every 30min or so :/ I've tried running it as admin, setting permissions, different drivers, even beta drivers and nothing seems to work. Its unbarable today. Specs are: Intel Core i5 3470, ATI Radeon HD7850, 8GB of DDR3 ram. So I guess I'm more than capable of running the game...

came to a conclusion that there is no fix for this on our part....
we're doomed....

Playing in a Dell XPS 15 with HD Intel 3000 and NVIDIA 525M (using NVIDIA when playing the game, of course).

Never got any problem when playing in the Beta, but my notebook start to freeze when early acess begin...

Randomly the ffiv.exe causes an error with the display control nvlddmkm file. The program freezes and crashes after it.

I have been ruinning several games with high demmands of hardware without any bug. The videocard chip isn't overheated and the game goes perfectly and smoothly until it crashes... and the problem persists with any version of Nvidia drivers (newest and oldest), several tests for hardware problems passed with no detected problems, and this kind of problems only happens with FF XIV ARR in my computer... It happens independently of the display settings...

My computer is a Dell XPS laptop I can chose what GPU to use. It does not freeze when using the modest onboard GPU Intel 3000...

I use FFXIV with a Nvidia 540M Card with 2GB and CPU iCore 7i with 6 GB RAM. Windows 8.

I'm not agree with users that say that its a hardware problem when other soft runs perfectly...

With almost everyone posting that they have a Nvidia card, it's kind of hard to not see the pattern and put the cause on the drivers from Nvidia..

For those having a similar problem with a ATI card, I read somebody is using some very old ATI drivers 12.10something (drivers from October 2012), update to the latest stable drivers. Or latest beta if you're in an adventurous mood.

With almost everyone that reported a BSOD using nvidia drivers it's probably not the case, but if your computer BSOD during a gameplay it's best to check the memory and if the computer doesn't overheat or has a good airflow just in case. A fan like the one that exhaust the hot air at the back from your computer can stop working and cause your computer to overheat. which also causes the memory to only give errors during a gameplay session and not when it's "cooler" like, say, 10~20 minutes after the computer crashed. It's never a good sign when your computer suddenly becomes silent.

@Raace; a corrupted game asset crashes the game not the whole computer.

I'm getting the same kind of problem but it's only in dungeons and no where else in the game. I'll be keeping my eye on this thread and I hope SE will be able to address this issue officially soon.

its not an overheating issue. every single person has checked their temps. they're all fine
