Someone i had a crushed on gave me this name.
Mine is original as well (and a character of a future book I'd like to write):
twilight -> Twilie
sylph + fey -> Sylfei
Not one bit original for mine. Big fan of the Xenosaga games, and basically just picked one of the E.S. machines I liked. Dinah is actually my favorite, but Zebulun was actually a male name.
Mine is simply a mix of these two:
Ross Nichols (1902–1975) a Cambridge academic and published poet, artist and historian, who founded the Order of Bards, Ovates and Druids in 1964. He wrote prolifically on the subjects of Druidism and Celtic mythology.
His druid name was Nuinn.
+
Klaus Sperber (January 24, 1944 – August 6, 1983), better known as Klaus Nomi, was a German countertenor noted for his wide vocal range and an unusual, otherworldly stage persona.
And there you have it :)
Just two guys I find fascinating for completely different reasons :o
My first name is based off Belldandy from Ah! My Goddess, a longtime favorite anime of mine. Her character is based off one of the Three Norns (or Fates) from Norse Mythology:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ver%C3%B0andi
My last name is a form of Valkyrie, also from Norse mythology:Quote:
In Norse mythology, Verðandi (Old Norse, meaning possibly "happening" or "present"[1]), sometimes anglicized as Verdandi or Verthandi, is one of the norns.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valkyria
And so, my Deity is of course Nymeia, The Spinner.Quote:
In Norse mythology, a valkyrie (from Old Norse valkyrja "chooser of the slain") is one of a host of female figures who decide which soldiers die in battle and which live. Selecting among half of those who die in battle (the other half go to the goddess Freyja's afterlife field Fólkvangr), the valkyries bring their chosen to the afterlife hall of the slain, Valhalla, ruled over by the god Odin. There, the deceased warriors become einherjar.
I love mythology and have used this name since the beginning of FFXI.Quote:
Nymeia is the watcher of celestial bodies and goddess of fate.
A man to hug and kiss.
Duh!
Poor Moe, he does ask for it though.
Hrmm, I forgot this part, which explains the kitty cat's color.
In Norse mythology, Surtr or Surt (Old Norse "black" or "the swarthy one")
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surtur
mines is hardcore
first name(Origin of the word) = http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indira
last name = http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cliodhna
Started playing FFXIV with a friend who was a big Dragon Age fan. He made a miquote named Sir Pouncealot, and we always liked having similar names. So I made up Lady Purrsalot to go with that. He quit after a month....
I Like the colour Red. Need I say more?
...
OK...
Rosetta - Rose(tta) Cause I like the pinkish red colour
Rouge - It another red.
Rosetta Rouge rolls off the tough nicely.
Voila!
My name!
Mines from a Clive Barker book, called Imajica, its a great read and highly recommend it
My name is rooted in astronomy, and starts with FFXI. Miranda is one of the moons of Uranus (which of course is itself named after Shakespeare characters as are all of the Uranian moons, but I'm in it strictly for the space stuff). This is how it was for just a day or two when I decided I didn't like the look of my original FFXI avatar so I deleted it and created again, but the name was now locked out on the server (which I had friends joining too, so no server switch). Thus the 'i' morphed into a 'y' and despite not being my original intent, I now rather like the alternate spelling so it's stuck with and transferred to XIV that way.
The last name is from Alcyone, one of the stars that make up the Pleiades star cluster (also known as the Seven Sisters, or in Japan as Subaru). Again though I shot myself in the foot and didn't follow the right procedure apparently for transferring my beta char to 1.0, so an extra 'e' got added in that one. Part of choosing Alcyone in particular was that although its Greek in origin, it sounds just a little bit Arabic which I thought fit in with choosing Ul'dah for a starting city.
Chocobo is named Oberon, another Uranian moon.
Don't actually remember the name of my path companion, lol... shows how much of a connection I ever felt to them.
Prolly gonna add another char as a male miqo'te in 2.0, and I got a name idea already, but don't want anyone to steal the idea :P If I'm not using space/astronomy names though, a tried and true method is to take a word/concept I think represents the character and run it through Google Translate until one of the languages for it sounds cool.
Some ancient Greek mythology about hillbillies and the zodiac - I think it was on a ESPN documentary I first heard it. Been so long since I got to play the character on FFXIV its all starting to dim.
Cynthis Ravenbrook is one of the main characters in a series of books that I am writing. She was supposed to die at the end of the second book but I liked her and her relationship with the main protagonist so much I decided to keep her around.
Mine is origonal. The name Reika has multiple meanings in Japanese depending on what Kanji you use. I decided to go with 冷菓, which means Frozen Desert............................ wink wink.
I'll stick with it for when I change to Male Miqo'te. Hint hint wink wink.
Goes with the hair color. Goes with my favorite element Ice. Goes with......... wink.
Shadowheart I use because Darkness is my other favorite element. If I were a pokemon, I would be Dark/Ice all the way! Tho, I may have a different last name for ARR when they let us name change, still staying dark-themed.
This is a nice thread. Nice to meet you all interesting characters!
I'm Firangel Icewind(Fira~), and the name all started from such a long time ago. My first MMO was iRO(Ragnarok Online) and being stuck at character name I ended up making an archer and decided to go with FF-related spell so i came up with Firarrow. After quitting that game to jump on FFXI when that first came out(in NA) I kept Firarrow on Carbuncle server( http://de.ffxiah.com/player/Carbuncle/Firarrow ; 2009 was when i quit i think)... Lots of memories, stories, and also drama or whatnot, i couldn't bring that along to the new beginning that was FFXIV, so i modified it a bit with something a really good friend of FFXI used to call me, a guardian angel(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jRehmX3zlwE);
So Firangel. Icewind was totally random and a wordplay with elements, coincidentally there's an old game called Icewind Dale, nothing related to my character name but it was a very nice game for its time.
(For an ingame friend: if you're back for 2.0, hope to see you around Wulfgar Icewind!)
Companion was named Lumiere(altho they're taking that off for 2.0) which was a really good friend's character back in FFXI (Lumiiere). The name is french for light altho it was really taken from(as explained from my friend) the anime Kiddy Grade, which had as main character Eclair and the sidekick Lumiere.
Chocobo's name is my old self; Firarrow.
At last my retainers' names are Ramza from FFT(http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Ramza_Beoulve) and Mintberry from a South Park pun (http://southpark.wikia.com/wiki/Mint-Berry_Crunch).
Hope to see you guys whenever the game relaunches ~<3
pseu·dop·si·a
n. Visual hallucinations, illusions, or false perceptions.
http://medical-dictionary.thefreedic...com/pseudopsia
Lucke: "Lu" for short
I mix of luck and Locke. Based on the old XI superstition that rubbing a taru's head will be luck (IE drop rates). The 'e' is silent like in Locke.
Arrayo: "Arr" for short
One of if not my first MMO character ever. I had a kitty bard in EQ1 way back in the day. I made that word up as far as I know. I like the way it sounds. *ARR named after me is coincidental* lol
Well Geesus is a name I borrowed from a GF of mine who passed away before XIV was launched. She was someone I met while playing XI (Remora) and she was a Whm. I thought it was a funny name since Geesus pronounced the same as Jesus was a Whm and well, Jesus "cured" people. lol Since she was unable to of course play, I promised to keep the name and the job class in her honor.
Ravenheart ... I live in Baltimore, home of Edgar Allan Poe who wrote the poem The Raven and is also the name of our pro Football Team the Baltimore Ravens. Also being a huge fan of History and Sci-Fi/Fantasy novels, Dragon Lance and David Eddings books, the use of the name <insertname>heart is abundant as it is in history, Richard "the Lionheart". So threw it together and got Ravenheart.
Chocobo is named after the aircraft carrier I served on while in the Navy; Kittyhawk. I felt it appropriate as it's part of my life and adds a little fun to the game for me as well as remembrance.
My XI character's name was named after my youngest son; Eireamhon which is Gaelic and the first true "King" of all Ireland. People use to of course just call me Eire which is the Irish Gaelic for the name of the island of Ireland.
Opabinia is a freaky sea creature of the Cambrian age (Dutch: Cambrium) with some special properties like 5 eyes and a grasping 'snout'. I liked the sound of the word, and picked other Cambrian animals like Pikaia and Hallucigenia for my other kitties. But long names tend to be turned into a shorter version, creating: Pika, Hallu and Opa (which means gramps in Dutch).
Aesop - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aesopus
Loved the stories as a kid, also the name of my cat.
Squaresoft - pretty self explanatory
I made it up a lil' over 10 years ago after much thinking, way back in RO (Ragnarok Online). I liked it, I stuck with it, and use it for pretty much everything online since then. Heck, even some RL friends call me Klefth sometimes instead of my real name nowadays, lol.
Jinrya Geki (Gin-re-ah Geh-key)
I have 4 characters that I couldn't decide who I like more. Goku, Cloud, Orphen, and Hayate (Dead Or Alive), one day I decided to make a character that represented them all in a way. I created a character named Ryajin Geki (Ri-ah-gin) who became my Paladin-type character. Between Templars and Wizards, I had an equal interest in both. Seeing as Orphen had the least influence in making Ryajin, I made him a younger brother. A 9 year old master wizard named Jinrya.
Yes, lazy at the time but I can't bring myself to change it. Jinrya is just Rya and Jin reversed.
Geki sounded like a cool last name to have and found out it means "Strike". As for Jinrya and Ryajin, both names only have 1 meaning. Jin means "Benevolence or flowing". Rya has no meaning. :c
My current name Babydoll comes from Sucker Punch. :) The name I normally use though and am changing to in 2.0, Cesil...has a more fun story :D
One day my little brother and I were playing FF6...and we got to the part where we had to pick a name for Celes. So I had to run upstairs for a moment and told my brother to "Just give her any name, I don't care, pick a girl one though!" We had recently finished playing FF4 (For the 100th time lol) so I came back downstairs and saw he named her Cesil. I was like what is Cesil supposed to be...you meant C E C I L from FF4!? He goes NO ITS CESIL...its the girly way to spell Cecil! So...yeah..that kind of stuck with me. :D
and my last name...I got it from Selphie's ability in FF8 lol.
When I was a little kid, I used to love coming up with songs. One I came up with was a lullaby, but I couldn't write it down at that age so slowly forgot all but one line of it: moon beams and crystal dreams.
As a teenager, I was trying to come up with a nickname for an email account and many of the more traditional sounding names had already been taken. In frustration, and stubbornly refusing to add random numbers to my names, I tried to think of what wouldn't be taken and would never be taken by someone else so I could use it all over the place and not run into a me-1234. I decided to go with an acronym, but of what? Just as I asked myself that question, the old line from the long forgotten lullaby popped into my head. I went with n for and because I was a teenager and I considered 'n' for and cool XD Ever since, I've been mbncd.
After a while, I was coming across sites asking for my "real name" and I didn't want to give that information out (FaceBook and the like didn't exist back then, people were more careful with their private information) so I had to some up with a vaguely realistic name as mbncd just didn't cut it for that sort of question. I didn't want to come up with and learn a whole new name though so I just took the easy way out and used the last two words from the same line, calling myself Crystal Dreams.
I've been mbncd or Crystal Dreams for so long now that it feels odd when someone calls me by my birth name. I'm more likely to look up if someone says something that sounds like "em bee" or "Chris". I don't like being called by my full nicknames by friends as it seems impersonal; like mb is more friendly then mbncd and Crys is more friendly than Crystal. I don't recognise other variations like mbn or Cry though.
That's the long and probably boring tale of my name(s) ;P
Noblewar doesn't refer to me being "Noble Rich" and the "Warrior" class.
I created this name in XI when I was 16, now I'm 26! Back in the day I didn't know what MMO's were about, well the only thing I could think of was that I wanted to be that toon to always focus on helping and protecting the poor. Of course that still hasn't been the case with any MMO I've played lol. I expected a more action type of experience and what I had in mind was mobs chasing poor or untrained people and me going to save them.
My name fit well in the main stories but not so much in the general questing parts. The lore of my character is mostly helping people who need help, want help and always stand in front of them to be able to shield them.
Mine is Naraku Diabolos. My character on FFXIV is based upon the looks and name of my FFXI one, the blonde spiky haired Elvaan, Naraku. I'm a fan of InuYasha, so Naraku is the villain. It means "hell" in Japanese. I was on the Diabolos server, so I used that as the last name. Basically I'm "hell devil."
My other character on FFXI was a secondary and/or mule named Hayley. She's named after my favorite singer, Hayley Westenra http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hayley_Westenra http://www.hayleywestenra.com/ I will be making a character on ARR named after her, so she'll be a Bard. I also plan on naming a daughter once I have children named Hayley, too (Hayley Oceana, Oceana because I love the ocean).
My chocobo on Version 1.0 is named Avalon, as there is a music brand that I like called Avalon Music (they make really great CD albums; you can find them and the Solitudes, LifeScapes, and Reflections brands in places such as Hallmark, Target, Bed Bath & Beyond, museums, aquariums, and even Busch Gardens).
Loved Sucker Punch. It's one of the few movies I own a hard copy of.
Ksenia?
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0989959/
Usually it's Ioci and I have an Ioci in FF14. She is a random gen name from SWG and has been in every MMO I play.
My real name is Nicolo' (which is Italian). You can make diminuitive versions of some words by adding "ino" at the end, so a small Nicolo' would be Nicolino.
Chop off the pointless Ni at the beginning and you get Colino which is how my family and close friends have called me since I was a little boy.
I only found out a good 20 years later that Colino is also an anagram of Nicolo'.
Gimme some gil please? I've got kids to feed!
My own meaning really.
Solace because I like to be alone sometimes. Often find me off by myself, looking at some scenery.
Trueblade has a double meaning. I tend to speak my mind truthfully and I make sure my aim is always true.
I like the addition of chocobo names btw..
Mine is Queequea.
I thought it had a nice ring to it.. Solace and his trusty steed Queequea.
Que is close to kweh. The noise chocobos make. :P
Neat topic. :)
Kaplan is the last name of my favorite super hero, Marvel's Billy Kaplan/ "Wiccan"
In FFXI, my character was Sesshomarusan (I loved InuYasha). My oldest friend's name was Shahn, which I always pronounced "Shawn" and kinda just saw the 2nd 'h' as extra.
When I was trying to think of a last name for XIV, I wanted to bring part of XI with me, so I chopped up sesshomaru, and added an extra 'h' to reference Shahn. He liked it so much he made it his surname as well...then my brother and cousin started and we all became the Homahru Clan! ;)
Mortechai: Name that's stuck with me since EQ1 came out @.@;; can't remember why I picked it XD. Hammerhand: Chose that as my last name because when 1.0 launched I wanted to play Pugilist as my main. I also had "Voidwatcher" as my legacy name in SWTOR as homage to the last content I played in FFXI before I quit(After 9 years, bless ; ; ).
Kenshiro Joestar... anyone who is versed in manga will know.
I'm a big William Gibson fan

I'm just plain Wonderful
Gouki (Akuma from Street Fighter)
+
Funaki (WWE, I just liked the name)

Goufunaki
Originally thought of it for either part 2 or 3 of the tony hawk games I had on the dreamcast for some random character I was putting together in the editor. Was watching dbz at the time, so the idea of mixed names came from the fusion episodes.
I ended up really liking the name, though, so I just kept it, and used it for my own original character I created.
