Yeah but don't deny you still face the "right direction" or you did until the day you quit, just in case.
I only got cooking to level 51 and I was always asking "what direction do I face to get skillups with xx crystal" in linkshell.

Based on usual people It would be a sin against humanity to have monsters go to sleep at night or only get aggressive at night since XI did it. Playing XIV makes you appreciate just how many little touches they threw in XI in regards to stuff like that though.
As for synth direction, it pretty much becomes second nature to people regardless if you believe it or not, just like moon phases in terms of drop rates. The reason SE would implement stuff relating to moonphases or days is quite simple:
It can affect more than crafting.
Holy shit, what a simple concept. >.>
Challenge AcceptedQuote:
Ah, but will facing north-by-northeast at 2:45 a.m. while the moon is a waning crescent result in a 27% increase in your chances to synthesize HQ mythril ingots!? That is real the question!
You have no idea what you're talking about:
Do you ever stop to wonder why SE would associate a specific element to each day, month, year and direction of both FFXI and FFXIV while simultaneousl refusing to disclose whether or not they have an effect on in game mechanics such as crafting? I think it's absurd to think otherwise.Quote:

In terms of moonphases, there's a Blue Mage spell called Plenilune Embrace which heals the party member and gives them attack and magic attack boosts that varied based on moon phase, given the name. Stuff like that is affected by moon phases and the days but people link it mostly to crafting.
Kira seen FFXI and immediately went into "NO!" mode lol. The only issue was how it was presented to us compared to XI being more straight forward about it.
Anyone who has spent a decent amount of time farming HQ darksteel and gold ore in FFXIV has noticed by now a difference in drop rate on new moon and full moon phases.
The only question is to what degree these things affect crafting and gathering. As you can see by my signature, I was an avid FFXI crafter and devoted all of my time to it. HQ theory crafting went to an extreme of testing whether equipping an elemental staff had an effect on the HQ rate but I can assure you that direction and time frames were the norm.
Shame that you never played FFXIV, a game with a more severe RNG than XI.
I noticed this as well. This is why SE will never confirm or deny it in regards to XIV since we do have phases as well as deities regarding this stuff in terms of lore alone.
I said Eorzea doesn't have specified days of the week, as in Earthsday, Windsday, etc. What you linked just shows months carry those properties, not days.
If you take this same system into consideration the exact same way it was applied in Final Fantasy XI, you have 74 hours and 40 minutes (about 3 days) every 18 days to align yourself with the proper element. In Final Fantasy XI, you would not want to fight avatars on their elemental day, because they were more powerful, but a day lasted 1 hour, so you could just wait. Having to wait 3 days for this to pass would suck, a lot.
If they have a similar system to XI had with elemental days and such, A Realm Reborn is going to be even more obnoxious.
KiriA, there's another letter in there.
Fun fact: I loved Final Fantasy XI. Please stop acting like I hate it.
Also, there was nothing "straight forward" about XI.
Haha yeah, I mean Firesday didn't enhance fire spells or anything. Oh, telling me to kill Lizard families during earthsday or earth weather definitely wasn't straight forward either.
When I was doing CoP, I definitely wasn't told to head to Ru`lude Gardens guard post for a cutscene or anything..yep. Selecting Cure and using it on a player didn't heal them, it was a complicated set of algorithms that you had to calculate in order to make cure actually heal people, yeah?
Let's be realistic here, the only thing that wasn't put out in the open was latent/hidden/food effects/strategies (strategies most MMO companies won't tell to begin with because they want to see their player base actually attempt to figure it out.) The only reason there's quest info on the wiki for example is because people actually did them in order to supply it, unless you actually thought SE was the one adding Mission and Quest data to the wiki?
This is why even with XIV SE would never confirm or deny things like moon phases.
Fixed...

Just sayin'...
I guess FFXIV has just been "even more obnoxious" all along:
Every in game hour is assigned one of the six elements which repeat 4 cycles for a total of 24 hours per dayQuote:
Chapter 1 - The Suns:
By the unit of a sole Sun we mean that period which lasts for the duration of four cycles of the six elemental hours - those of Ice, Water, Wind, Lightning, Fire, and Earth. And so is the sun twenty hours and four, and so shall it ever be.
Quote:
Chapter 2 - The Moons:
The life of a single Moon spans four cycles of eight Suns, and is thus the sum of thirty and two. The eight deriveth from the elements six, Ice, Water, Wind, Lightning, Fire, and Earth, and the polarities two, Astral and Umbral.
The life of a month consists of four cycles of 8 days (4x8 = 32 days) The eight day cycles consist of ice day, waterday, windday, lightningday, fireday, earthday, lightday and darkday.
Months of the year: 12 in totalQuote:
Chapter 3 - The Years:
The Year is made when the Moon goeth round the two Astral and Umbral poles, fluctuating between the six elements, and that in turn. In this, the Year can be said to be the length of twelve Moons. The first and second Moons of the Year are the first astral and first Umbral, and together they share affinity with Ice. On their watch, all is frozen, and breath of life sloweth to near silence beneath. The second Astral and second Umbral Moons come third and fourth in turn, and they are the Water of the melting Ice, and with their flowing slaketh the thirst of life again. Fifth and sixth are the third Astral and third Umbral Moons, and the Wind bloweth over the Water, carrying its heavenly boons near and far. The fourth pairing of Astral and Umbral Moons come six and seven. when the heavens rageth with the furies of Lightning and sendeth them below with godly terror to test the faith of men. The ninth and tenth Moons are the Fifth Astral and Umbral, as the Lightning turns to Fire, and it charreth growing life with the colors of its flames, bleeding blade and leaf with brilliant ues of crimson and scarlet. Year's end eometh in the eleventh and twelfth Moons, the sixth Astral and sixth Umbral, in which the Earth consumes all, for out of the ground we are taken for the dust we are, and to the dust we shall return.
1) Astral Ice
2) Umbral Ice
3) Astral Water
4) Umbral Water
5) Astral Wind
6) Umbral Wind
7) Astral Lightning
8) Umbral Lightning
9) Astral Fire
10) Umbral Fire
11) Astral Earth
12) Umbral Earth
Ice turns to water, is vaporized by wind, which becomes lightning, that creates fire, which leaves but earth in it's wake.
*Kira's Mind Blown*
Read what I write before responding ignorantly it would prevent me from having to repeat myself and thus save a lot of time.

There was a lot of stuff not put out in the open that you didn't mention. Unless you had prior knowledge, you wouldn't know how or when to get a subjob, where to do advanced job quests, what level you needed to be, where to level at what levels, etc.
Yes, there's the whole "trial and error thing," but let's be honest here, aside from the initial group of players who had to figure this stuff out on their own, nobody tested these things. They all went online to find guides on how to do it. I'm not saying a game has to be like "OH HAY YOU JUST HIT LEVEL 18 CONGRATS NOW HEAD TO THIS PLACE TO GET YOUR SUBJOB YOU NEED THESE ITEMS LOL AFTER THAT GO TO THIS PLACE CONGRATS AGAIN!", but there has to be some form of communication to the player on where to go.
KiriA, you just have to ignore Elexia. She only sees in extremes. Common sense and middle grounds don't exist in her universe.
So, every day of the week is broken up into the 6 elements, which then breaks down into 8 elemental days of the week (2 of these elements are left out of the hours/months), to the 12 months, divided into 6 elements? Gotcha!
I take it back, the days are specified so simply, how could I not have seen it before?

I don't know how you see anything other than sarcasm in everything he said.
Also, as stated above, it's KiriA. :)
It's great to finally see what night-time will look like. Personally I think the light level is perfect. Maybe those of you who think it's too bright have your monitors too bright? (Or else mine is too dark).
When I read about the HQ on this thread I was like WTH!? JP blog doesn't say that and checked out the NA blog... I kind of like NA blogs post better :) Good job Fernehalwes!
** Reinheart hands over HQ signed subligar to Fernehalwes. (Crafted facing North, Full Moon, 00:00AM after /pray)
You know Matsume's one too but also Cloudo Onizuka's one... NA GM's are more fun to talk too... JP GM's I talked to in the past were so bland.... I'll remember to switch to english before calling GM next time... lol
I love how the lighting looks on the first two shots. Especially the second one.
This one looks a tad too bright, though:

Now I really wanna see how it will look outside of town without all the lamps and stuff.
Looks great~ The darkness is deep and much more realistic than the blue-tint look from 1.0
I can't wait to see other weather.
Lol, woohoo! A blog post with some real meat to it!
Don't get me wrong, I love reading Fernehawles witty banter, but to find a blog post with something actually substantial in it is pretty cool!
Thanks Ferne!
Looks awesome:)
Ive not seen many games having moonphases in their nightcycles :D
Ah, the return of the argument about elements and days. I hope ARR presents a consistent lore and a functioning system so we can figure it all out.
But on-topic, I look forward to a moon in the sky that isn't a seemingly random phase each night like in v1. (The phase icon in the UI behaved well.) I won't be picky about them keeping a minimum level of light even on new moon nights, though. :)
Yeah I'm pretty sure the GM was joking, since I asked him whether or not my scarf of wondrous wit had any hidden effects.
Well KiriA* I don't think Eorzea contains weeks as we know them and if they did each month would consist of 4 weeks, each week consisting of 8 days for a total of 32 days per month. There are 12 months each containing 32 days forta total of 384 days per year.
Time passes like this in Eorzea:
00:00 - 01:00 = Ice Hour
01:00 - 02:00 = Water Hour
02:00 - 03:00 = Wind Hour
03:00 - 04:00 = Lightning Hour
04:00 - 05:00 = Fire Hour
05:00 - 06:00 = Earth Hour
06:00 - 07:00 = Ice Hour
07:00 - 08:00 = Water Hour
08:00 - 09:00 = Wind Hour
09:00 - 10:00 = Lightning Hour
10:00 - 11:00 = Fire Hour
11:00 - 12:00 = Earth Hour
12:00 - 13:00 = Ice Hour
13:00 - 14:00 = Water Hour
14:00 - 15:00 = Wind Hour
15:00 - 16:00 = Lightning Hour
16:00 - 17:00 = Fire Hour
17:00 - 18:00 = Earth Hour
18:00 - 19:00 = Ice Hour
19:00 - 20:00 = Water Hour
20:00 - 21:00 = Wind Hour
21:00 - 22:00 = Lightning Hour
22:00 - 23:00 = Fire Hour
23:00 - 24:00 = Earth Hour
More accurately each elemental hour would begin at 00:01 and end on 01:00 but I'm lazy and used 00:00 to 01:00
That completes one day.
Each day is assigned an element. There are thirty two (32) days per game month. The order is always the same in regards the elements except this time you add light and dark after earth and repeat the cycle 4 times yet again.
It should be noted that there are 8 moon phases each lasting a total of four game days, starting with new moon.
New Moon
Day 1 - Ice
Day 2 - Water
Day 3 - Wind
Day 4 - Lightning
Waxing Crescent
Day 5 - Fire
Day 6 - Earth
Day 7 - Astral
Day 8 - Umbral
Waxing Half
Day 9 - Ice
Day 10 - Water
Day 11 - Wind
Day 12 - Lightning
Waxing Gibbous
Day 13 - Fire
Day 14 - Earth
Day 15 - Astral
Day 16 - Umbral
Full Moon
Day 17 - Ice
Day 18 - Water
Day 19 - Wind
Day 20 - Lightning
Waning Gibbous
Day 21 - Fire
Day 22 - Earth
Day 23 - Astral
Day 24 - Umbral
Waning Half
Day 25 - Ice
Day 26 - Water
Day 27 - Wind
Day 28 - Lightning
Waning crescent
Day 29 - Fire
Day 30 - Earth
Day 31 - Astral
Day 32 - Umbral
New Moon
There are 12 months in the year, again the same pattern is seen in regards the order of the six primary elements except this time each element is applied an astral or umbal "shade" which follows suit:
1) Astral Ice Month
2) Umbral Ice Month
3) Astral Water Month
4) Umbral Water Month
5) Astral Wind Month
6) Umbral Wind Month
7) Astral Lightning Month
8) Umbral Lightning Month
9) Astral Fire Month
10) Umbral Fire Month
11) Astral Earth Month
12) Umbral Earth Month
There are also 12 years per game "Epoch" as opposed to 10 in real life. Each year of an epoch is associated with one of the Twelve gods and hence an element.
Earth - Althyk, The Keeper and Nophica, The Matron
Fire - Azeyma, The Warden and Nald'thal, The Traders
Lightning - Byregot, The Builder and Rhalgr, The Destroyer
Ice - Halone, The Fury and Menphina, The Lover
Wind - llymlaen, The Navigator and Oschon, The Wanderer
Water - Nymeia, The Spinner and Thaliak, The Scholar
And im willing to bet money the order of the years is the same elemental pattern seen in the months that is: ice, water, wind, lightning, fire and earth. I don't know who of each element is considered the astral and whom the umbral but that doesn't really matter since the pattern is likely a repition of the months.
At last the epochs make up the eras but to this we are left in the dark. I am certain that a dev posted some information shedding light on the length of each era (i think it's considered roughly 2,000 years) but I haven't dug up hat post.
What's interesting here is that as opposed to the months which begin with astral and end in umbral, the eras begin with umbral and end with astral:
What's interesting here is the mention that the 6th umral era belonged to water, a great flood of sorts. If indeed the 6th umbral and astral eras correspond to the element of water then the order is different than that which we see in the hours, the days and the months of the year. Which is confusing to say the least.Quote:
The Sixth Umbral Era belonged to the waters, as heavy rains fell and the seas rose high, submerging and cleansing all in a great deluge. With time the waters receded, ushering in the present Sixth Astral Era, during which man has again rebuilt his halls and tilled his lands.
Ahh it hurts my head to remember all the crafting "rules" from FFXI.. But I wanted them to work, so IMO they did work. Psychosomatic or not.... I knew I was going to get an HQ synth if I followed those rules correctly. If it didn't work, I must not have been facing the direction exactly enough. :P
I disagree. You just quoted the part of the tomes that says a moon/month lasts 4 cycles of 8 days. It seems clear that the concept of weeks exists, at least as much as on Earth where we also don't give them names but define how many days long they are.
It's nice to see one of the interpretations of all that from v1, but ultimately it didn't have any detectable influence on anything. So far nobody has seen time pass in ARR. I'd much rather see SE change time/lore/elements to make it all logical and useful than stick with the old system of ambiguities and impotence.
Meh.. From those shots, the night sky look to boring, I was expecting something more stellar. Like you can see the galaxy or something to give you a reason to look up and admire besides the moon.
"Ah, but will facing north-by-northeast at 2:45 a.m. while the moon is a waning crescent result in a 27% increase in your chances to synthesize HQ mythril ingots!? That is real the question! ~Fernehalwes"
Lmaoo Such a blatant XI Reference. Oh man. So good. Sooo good.
Answers are a prison. It also takes out all the fun of discovering arcane knowledge like elemental affinities. (Even if all you do is look it up on a wiki page.:)) But SE did finally officially name the moon phases. (In v1.x just hover the mouse over the moon phase icon). Same for weather.
FFXI was superb in this regard. The moon had a slight color to it the same as the day's crystal affinity. And there were a few special quests that required a certain moon phase or time of day or night, or even weather. Extreme weather had a double elemental effect. Each zone only supported appropriate weather, like no snow on tropical islands, and was perhaps influenced slightly by the time of in-game year. So much attention to detail in FFXI.
I wonder if they'll have those colored stars in the cardinal directions like they did for XI. I'm pretty sure those stars are where the crafting compass came from in the first place.
yeah that's why i said "as we know them" as in 7 day weeks, that's also why i said "if anything they would be 8 day weeks." In any case it's not like one week holds any significance in game in the same sense that the hours, days, months and years of the game are attributed to elements.
Personally I enjoy the ambiguities of the game, it creates a sort of wild goose chase that is sure to lead you down one rabbit hole or another. I really do enjoy searching for the finer intricacies of lore in game as you can see. However, a certain level of mystery should be maintained to keep the treasure hunt mentality alive. I find it oh so boring when every detail is laid out in front of you such as in a guide, it destroys the search for knowledge and the fun that comes along with it.
Oh and I would also love to see more stellar nighttime skies, literally, as in visible galaxies in purple and pink hues akin to the hubble space telescope images. Maybe this could be seen only from certain high altitude vantage points such as crystal tower or some mountain...
Beautiful.
I've always loved nighttime more than daytime, IRL as well as in video games. Nighttime is always prettier, and lights shine the brightest. Eorzea's nighttime in ARR looks like it's going to have me out late many a day when I play this. :D
Looking forward to seeing more!
